A puzzling point as to the position of doctors if the Guardianship of Infants Bill bocane law cagagod the attention of a Joint Committee of Lords and Com- monis last month.

The Earl of Onslow asked the witness, Sir James Greig, what would happen if both the father and mother, having equal rights over a child suffering from appen dicitis, did not both give their consent to an operation being performed. The child might dio before a Court could in- tervene and give a décision.:

Sir James Greig thought the doctor would perform the operation and let the parquts fight it out afterwards.

Several members of the Committen suggested that a heavy responsibility would rest on the doctor if the patient died.

Mr. R. Richardson, M.P.. suggested that the doctors might be given power to perform an operatios if one of the par ents consented, but other members of the committee expressed the opiatoa that doctors would not like to have such "a responsibility thrown upon them.

It appeared to him that the principle of equal |* ̈· guardianship, which prevalled in some of the States of the United States; bad led to the principle being adopted in Canada. The reports did not indicate whether equal guardianship worked satisfactorily. hut the deduction he had drawn, from the course which legislation had followed I was that the difficulties which it was feared would hrise in Great Britain had, not created trouble.

A married lady who gave evidence as to her own case said sho was not separat- ed from her husband. She lived in the same house as he did, and she was maîn- taining herself as a secretary. The hos band bad sent their two boys to a school, and she was only allowed to see then occasionally for a few hours by permis sion" of the headmaster. During the vaca tions their address was not given to her, And she had no knowledge of where they were. Her solicitor had advised that if the case were brought into court her hus- band would be regarded as the natural guardian of the childrên,

After a discussion between members of the Committee, the chairman said his legal friends did not support the opinion of the witness's solicitar as to her inability to get redress

The Comitter adjourned.

THE ART OF GETTING ON WITH OTHERS.

The Rev. R. J. Campiell. 1.D., says the intrepid explorer, Sir Ernest 'Shackle- ton, once said that the most serious danger to he encountered during the hardships of a polar expedition was that arising from irritability. So well were he and his companions aware of this that they took special pains to guard against it beforehand.

Monotony, confined space during the lengthy periods when it became necessary To take refuge from the elements, ab- normal atmospheric conditions, and the ceaseless strain of sudurance, all combined to throw the best regulated nerves out of wear and create unreasoning antipathies.

A careful watch had, therefore to be kept on every symptom tending in this direction, and special means devised for freshening thought and feeling as well as physical energy.

For similar reasons a course of moral hygiene is desirable in everyday life.

Decent-living, well-meaning people often fail to get on well together in the same house, the. same occupation, or the same community of interests.

If they only met casually they would like each other; us it is they hate cach other, or think they do.

Every little disagreeableness is magni- fed between them every peculiarity of either becomes detestable in the jaundiced eyes of his fellow.

As often as not mere unescapable near- s ha most to do with this clash of personalities, especially when conjoined with the hum-drum and commonplace of daily strain and toil. We are seldom at our best under auch conditions.

The young wife who was overcome with horror nt the thought that she would have to see her husband's face at the breakfast talle every day for the rest of her life unconsciously tapped a real source of trouble.

The remedy for it lies in obtaining sufficient mental detachment from one' daily concerns to enable one's nature to recover poise and strength.

Stand off from your brother bondsman till you are at peace with yourself 'and you will discern in him much to compas- sionate and something to love.
