According to opinions given by, the association against the Prohibition Amendment, the fact that the consumption of intexienting liquor is illegal has in itself been sufficient to lend many Americans who formerly drank little or nothing to conform to a fashion- able habit at social gatherings of carry- ing small pocket-Hasks of home-brewed or imported spirits.

Place of Deaths from alcoholism are estimated Observation. by the Federal nuthorities and the Anti- Saloon Lengue as only 20 per cent. of what they were before prohibition became the law, whereas the association against the Prohibition Amendment asserts that the percentage is 250. According to esti males supplied by the Department of State, the Bumber of deaths from, this cause rose, slightly after, 1920, although they had been decreasing steadily between 1917 and 1920...The State Department's figures are:-1917. 3,022; 1918, 2,216,

Farther statistics on this point compiled by the health authorities of aineteen cilies, all having populations over 300,000, 1show that the deaths from alcoholism in |1922 were slightly more than in 1920 or 1921, but were 57 per cent. fower than the deaths which occurred from this cause in 1916 or in 1917.

**LESS CHIME; GREATER THRIFT." The Anti-Salpon League claims that crime, to-day is only 43 per cent, of what it was before 1920, but the Federal author- ities, placing the percentage at 100, ap parently consider that prohibition has not allceted criminal statistics one way or the ather.

The opponents of prohibition, however, declare that the position is 25 per cent. worse than it used to be. A report pub- j lished by the Department of Cotumerce shows that between July 1st, 1917, and July 1st, 1999, the number of persona detained in State prisons increased from 72.4 to 74.5 per 100.000 of the population. During the same period the radio of Federal prisoners per 100,000 of the po pulation increased from 3 to 5.1.

Sinew the adoption of prohibition-pro- | ceeds the despatch marked increase," which in computed ut:40 per cent, has taken ples in the amount of deposits in sarings bausk. The supporters of pro-i hibition in the United States claim that the average wage-earner yow has consider ably more money to spend on the educa- tion of his children, on the furnishing of his home, on dress, sports, and amuse- ments. They also affirm that prohibition. has caused increased production in the -factories," and that many employds whic in former days absented themselves re gularly on the Mogday, and even on, the Tuesday, of each week now work a full six-day week. So many other factors have contributed to restore economic con- ditions in the United States since, the war that it is almost impossible to form any estimate of the extent to which pro hibition has eintributed to the recovery For.ntherwise--
