The race is described below, together with times and other details and a brief account of the entrant and pilot of the winning machine.
The result of the rare was almost a fore gone, conclusion hy noon on Saturday. The three leaders in expert estimation. Mr. F.. T. Courtney, Mr. L. Carter, and Mr. A. J. Cobham, who had been close together, began to spread out, and with Mr. Carter's retirement, due to a broken wire in his under-earringe, and the con- tinued fine performance of Mr. Court ney, who was maintaining sufficient lead to ensure victory (bar mishaps), the chief point of interest centred on flying times and second and third places. But there was another element in the situation that great interested the experts. The two fast scouts in the race. Mr. Carter "Grebe" and Mr. Courtney's Siddeley "Siskin," were both fitted with the Sid- deley air-cooled 325 bt, engine, and the great rivalry between water-cooled and air-cooled engines became white hot. Not many years ago it was believed that a size-limit would soon be reached in the nir-cooled type; but already that supposed size-limit has been passed, whilst bigger air-cooled engines are already in an ad- vanced stage. it being claimed for thein that they are no more extravagant in the matter of fuel and oil than the other divi- sion, whilst all radiator complications are avoided. The problem Has been mainly one of cooling, and the fact that this great Taco was won with an air-cooled engine indicates that the problem is by way of being solved.

THE FINISH.
打
The finish at Hendon was tame except for the universal delight at seeing the high-speed machines come roaring down on their long alants and across the line. But eight minutes separated Courtney and Cobham, five the latter and Broad. and six Brand and Barnard (who, won last: your's race). Then four minutes passed hefore Flemming came in, and about an hour lapsed before the last two arrived. During the afternoon some of the craft that had abandoned the race arrived back- by short cuts, and some beautiful exhibi- tions of advanced flying were given by Flight Lieut. P. W. S. Bulanan and Flying Officer S. Chick. The crowd was only of moderate dimensions, although there. were many ears in the enclosure. The fact that ine result could be foreseen by hunch-time, and the extreme heat of te day, combined with the distance of Hey- don from town, kept the numbers down. There were big crowds, however, at Glas- gow, Manchester and Bristol.
There was much of interest in the race With one exception the chines were fast, high-powered craft, lind the two scouts and the big supermarine amphi-t bian were objects of great interest. Particularly was it a happy thought to enter the flying-boat, the spectacle of which soaring over the fields and towns caused great excitement and speculation. It was a most unfortunate thishap-the laursting of two finding wheel tyres at Glasgow-that struck this machine out of the race. But the Air Ministry officials decided at the craft ought not to con tinue in the race. It was, of course, in sound enough condition to continue in se, and Captain Biard took it up 'nad proveeded southwards. Most of the other ujshaps were broken wires, irritating mis- adventures that cause delay. No machine was actually put out of action, and the engines were extraordinarily good, ahow ing what can be done by organisation and care.

It was a very remarkable race, in wea ther that seemed likely to trouble the engines, although in other respects the absence of wind made course-keeping casy, and assisted in the matter of travel speed on a long circuit with stages in all directions. Mr. Courtney taxed his en gine to the utmost. He never spared it: and his condence was fully justified in the result. for, in spite of a slight diffi culty at one point with his petrol supply, this compelling him to Hy at a great niti. tude over the bad country between Clas gow and Manchester, he completed the course in the remarkable time of 5 hours 95min. 2780c., an average speed of 119 miles per hour, actually 67min. less than- last year's fastest time over the same course. Mr. J. D. Siddeley, the entrant of his incline, bus every reason, to be proud of the result. Not only was the 2. Mr. H. Capt. H.S. The result was undeniable victory for the air-cooled divi- sion, since it settled any doubts to reliability. But it must not be inferred that the water-cooled engines in any way failed. "Aš a matter of fact the retire- menta from the Face were in no înstance sve one (Captain Stockéo's) due to trou- ble with the engine br with its installn- tion. As to winning speed, it obviously depends not only upon the engine, but also on the aeroplane itself. It is to he noteal that the only aeroplane with a` Napier engine in the race finished second, and heat last year's winning time by 57min Waiting at Headon for the Guich it seemed, even after the departure of

In spite of the absence of strong wind, the slower machines with the bigger time allowances fared badly. Of the Captris Broad certainly did best, dropping only thirteen minutes.
