DOMESTIC SERVICE.

The Domestic Service Committes has subored, even more than most of mich Committees from the evidence of fanciful Soize of the wit- persons and faddists. hosse seem to have been quite unawaru of the real meaning and object of domestic service.

It exists, of course, simply to set thou to whom it is rendered free to do work for which they are better fitted than making boils or sweeping floors. The fact that they do not all do b is of no more importance no mere and no less than the fact that many workinen d

Some came to puft some mechanical and artificial solution of the difficulties con

But domestic fronting the Committee. servies is a very human business, and life. ni bimanity are impatient of mechani mal so'ntions. Training is useful, no doubt: a girl can learn from it to make st, bed or cook a dinner. But she cannot Teara to be servant: that, like swin raing making a speech, cau culy be learnt in one way-by doing it,

At pre sent, as we knew before the Committee began sitting, there is a reluctance to do it. The risons given by witnesses are often fantastic enough: but what they realy point to as the resea or reasons is the general restlessness and sisturbance of outlook of which we are aware in all classes. This is not solely due to the War

Indeed, it has affected women macli more than men, who, in fact, come forward rather freely for domestic #ervice. It is primarily due to the movement to ward the independence and quality of women which has so profoundly affected sociely during the last fifteen years,

Soon, perhaps, its women get. neons tomed to the realities of what is changed and what is unchangeable - «in. their position, they will come to see that the notion that there is anything degrading in, service is merely absurd. The ques tion of dignity is really one of skit. And though it requires more skill to make s pair of boots than to clean them, it cer tainly requires much more to cook a din. ner, or to keep a house clean and in good order, than to perform successfully half or three-quarters of the tasks performed by the workers in factories and work- shops, Such work commonly provides less scope than that of a servant, "whether for the working of mind or for that of character. Domestic service is much les of a routine, and involves auch tauru trust on the part of the employer, and in dependent judgment on the part of the servant, That incidentally, ona reason why it cannot be brought under trade union regulations and fixed, universal hours any more than stock- farming or editing a newspaper. It' in fact, the advantages" and · diand- has, vantages of all close personal relation ship. In former days, servants, like wives, were almost defenceless; and if the husband or mistress was a brute, the relation was that of slave and bully. And the slave never escaped: the bully was always there. But today no ser- vant need be a slave ou hour longer than she chooses. She has only to walk off: she will at once be welcomed by plenty of mistresses who are not bullies.

Still, no doubt, the conditions vary widely between situation and situation, It all comes back to character on both sides. If the servant believes in good work, and does it, if her service is something better than the eye-service of men pleasers, it will be strange indeed if she does not find good mistress And if the mistress is considerate in the small things, that make up domestic life, if she denies herself rather than encroach on a servant's expected and reusotullo Pisuer, if she is careful never to be insolent, nerer to would her servant's self-respect, if, witle out intruding, she welcomes with interest Any confidences that may be offered to her about health or family or friendships, she will be sure to have servants, who are also friends.--Times.
