BORGIA-LIKE FEAST. THRILLING STORY OF RASPUTINS DEATH.
REVELATIONS BY SIR G, BUCHANAN.
Sir George Buchanan, who was British Ambassador in Petrograd, has written one of the most readable books ever written by a diplomat
He defends himself from the accusation of having brought about the Russian revolu tion, tells the inside" story of Rasputin's "execution," reveals his own desperate efforts to save the Czar from ruin, and des- cribes the collapse of Kerensky and the rise of the Bolsheviks in "My Mission to Russia (Cassell, two vola, 30) publisher to-day.
Sir Geogo Buchanan caine home from Petrograd January, 1918, on the verge of collapse. He was cordially received by the King
A few months later he made, a speech about Hussin, and be now reveals. that he was reprimanded by Lord Har dinge, on the instructions of the Coalition Cabinet, for having propounded a policy contrary to theirs."
"I replied," writes the sournful Ambas sador, that I had been careful to abstain from criticising them, and that I had but

I had never been able to make out what their policy really was Sir George Buchanan dora not "iske it lying down."
One of Sir George Buchanan'a accusers is Princess l'aley, widow of the Graal Duke Paul. She has declared that the British Embassy in Petrogiall, on the orders of | Lloyd "~ George, lecame foyer of propaganda," and that when Mr. Lloyd George heard of the downfall of the Czar he rubbed his hands and exclaimed: "One of the British war aims ia attained."
Sir George Buchanan replica with a touch of delicious palico -
1 would remind Princess Paley," he writes that the real promoters of the revolution were people like Raspatin. Sturmer, Protopopoff, and Mnie. Wyro- bouwa. I was careful to keep them at a distance, while Mma Wyrobouwa, who was directly reponsible for the influence gained by Hasputin over the Empress, was an honoured guest in her house,”
"FALSE NOSE and brazd.”
Sir George states that many people still believe that he was the prime mover who pulled the strings and started the revolution on its course. "
Ever since my return to England,” be adds, "this charge has fastened on me, and I have never been able to shake it off. The stories of my,revolutionary activities are as numerous as they are ridiculona."
One story, which he heard at Mari borough House from a Russian in atten- dance on the Empress Marie, was that he attended the funeral of the revola- tion victims in full uniform, and made a speech belavding the revolution.and expressing the hope that England would at no distant date follow Russia's example and get rid of her King."
4
Another story was that Sir George, to coun-- ter German influance, decided to start a revolution, "and attended revolutionary ertings with a false nose and a false beard." The name Rasputin "means "the De banchee,"
‚” and Sir George Buchanan states that Rasputin, a converted village drunkard. and sensualist, led a double life.
The sect which he founded, he writes, an offshoot of the Khlysty, or Mens Flagellants. Its members aspired, in soins strange way, to direct communion with God: but their services, which were held at night, savoured rather of the Bacchanalia of ancient Rowe than of the rites of the Christian Church.
"Singing and shouting, they moved round in a circle, quickening the pace at each turn till, after whirling round in a mad dance, they sank xlusterl to the ground. There then followed a scene over which it is best 10. draw a veil.
RASPUTIN'S FIETIMS.,"
Rasputin was well fitted to be the high priest of such a sect, for he exercised an extraordinary fascination over women. Though as a general rule he behaved abominably to them, his victims put up with every kind of ill-treatment sooner than leave him. Only one woman turned
on him, and nearly killed him by stabbing.
him in the abdomen."
་
The Czarina regarded Raspatio with feelings akin to adoration. She disbelieved the stories of his debauchery,
"The three chief actors in this historic drama writes Sir George of Rasputin's assassination, "were Prince Felix Yasupolt, Parixkevitch, the former reactionary who had led the attack on Rasputin at the opening sitting of the Dama, and the Grand Duke Buitri The latter's role was a pure-" jly passive one, his presence signifying apparently his approval of what all three regarded as a judicial execution. *****Rasputin, who bad been placed under special police » protection," "seerus. to have had a premonition of his danger, and it was with some difficulty that Prince Felix, who went to fetch bíta" in his motor, pursuaded him to come to supper at the Yasupoff Palace.
"There a Borgia-like repast, with poison- ed cakes and poisoned wine, awaited him.
Rasputin partook of both, but was none the worse. After vainly waiting for the poison to work, the prince rose, and make – ing some excuse, went up a little winding staircase to a room on the door above, where the Grand Duke, Puriskevitcb, and a doctor were waiting..
"Borrowing the Grand Duke's, revolver, he rejoined lasputin, and, as the latter was looking at an. bid crucifix on one of the walls, shot him bebind the left shoulder. ·
“Hearing the shot, the other three came down, and the doctor pronounced the death agony to have begun. I They then went out tomakearrangements for remaving the body. But Rasputin was not dead. Raising himself. up and throwing himself on l'rince Felix as the latter, on returning 10 the dining-mom, was bending over him, he managed to make his way through an adjoining pas sage to an vater court. Here he was shot dead by Puriskevitch
The body was thrown in the Neva, but wax recovered, and, Sir George Buchanan states that a few days later Rasputin was buried at night at Tsarskoe, in the presence | of the Czar and the Camids. “

Sir George decided to make "one last effort to save the Emperor, in spite of himself." He want to Tsarskoe, and in one of the boldest speeches ever made by an ambassa dor to a monarch, warned him that Russia was on the verge of ruin, und that he must
