SYMPATHY WITH THE WORKERS.

He had reached the mature ago of 40 when be came down into the rough and tungible of politics, and had had time to gain a great deal of industrial experience. This lesson was learnt not from the directors table but from sympathetic understanding of

f the problems of working men and women. In a notable speech delivered when he was President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Baldwin asked manufacturers to devote more atten÷ tion to the human factor in industry.

Speaking as a business man, he re-called the fact that at the time when he entered his fathers's business he knew the Christian names of hundreds of the workers, and he deplored the way in which "the employing class had during the last half-century driftes sway from those whom they emplural. He put the responsibility for rehumanising industry upon the large employera. These are not the sentiments commonly ascribed to the "die-hard" reactionary in the Socia lists' night-maro,

Life offers Mr. Baldwin no keener enjoy- ment than to tear himself away from London for a few leisure hours in his Worcestershire home in the company of his dogs and his pigs-The Times.

PAID DURING LOCK OUT,

As a business man he had a strong sense of social responsibility, The idea of Diseli, that the landed gentry of England owe it to themselves to improve the lot of their. Labourers, he tried to adapt to traile. When there was lock-out, he continued to pay the wages of bis employés. His aim of intro ducing by means of kindness and considera- tion, a new spirit of fellowship between: employers and employed may be impractic able, but there is no doubt of his sincerity in pursuing it. Daily Herald,

FOUR FAMOUS BISTERN,

The Four remarkable sisters "that phrase occurs again, aux again in memoirs of the family of the Mr. Baldwin. 11 con- cerns his mother and diree other daughters of the late Rev. Guorge B. Musdonakl.

Their story is quite romantic. Alice married. Mr. Lockwood Kipling, father of Mr. Rudyard Kipling. Agnes became Lady Poynter wife of the painter.

Georgiana became Lady Burne-Jones, and her beauty inspired her husband in the painting of that saintly type of wousa flat is the Burne-Jones' woman. Indeed sho was regarded in her own home as a saint as well as a beauty.

"

Louisa married Mr. Alfred Baldwin, the ironfounder who established the great firm of Baldwins. Thus she is the mother of a Prime Minister....

Mr. Baldwin's mother married an engineer who was to become a millionaire, but she workel hard none the less; and she has written a novel, "Richard Dare," volume, "Where Town and Country Meet," a book of fairy tales. "The Pedler's Pack," and one of the most noteworthy series of ghost stories. "The Shadows on the Blind.*

Mr. Baldwin's father and his brothers were conspictously good looking-one of the brothers posed for a painting of St. John the Baptist.-London Evening Nera

GENEROUS ACT.

Mr. Baldwin is popular in Bewdley (the divi sion of Worcestershire for which he is MP.). One story, will serve to show how he has earned the affection of the division. When the war broke out be offered to pay the friendly society contributions of all men from the division while they were away on service. In the division there are about 100 lodges and courts of various societies, with 10,000 or more meinbers. The number of members who were called out was considerable-many thousands. Mr. Baldwin has never disclosed the actual amount be paid-Birmingham Post.

AFFECTION FOR THE CLASSICS AND HIS PIPE

His scholarship is attested by those other week-ends which he loves to spend with such men as Mr. Hudyard Kipling and Professor Mackail, who are his first cousins. He has an equal affection for the classics and his pipes He is the type of country squire who, but for the increasing douands of high office, would rarely visit London and would be more ar homo in, ancient Athens than in Paris.-The Times.

BLASPHEMY LAWS,

The House of Lord, by EB votes to S, refused to pass the second reading of Earl Russell's Bill to amend the. Blas phemy Laws, making it impossible ta prosecute any person in any court for schism, heresy, blasphemous libel, and atheism Earl Russell pointed out that there was nothing in the Blasphemy Laws that prevented any one from speak ing disrespectfully of the Roman Catholic religion or mass. The Archbishop of Canterbury said that the last thing he desired was to buttress the Church of England, by artificial défences, but Earl Russell had failed to show that any griev ince existed. The Earl of Onslow point: ed out that blasphemy was punished only if there was a wilful intention to insult others by the abuse of the Christian reli

gion. People ought to be protected from outrages and abuse of this kind." Schiẩm, heresy, and atheism were no longer offences in the eyes of the Becular Court,
