1 MILES IN CONSTRUCTION. The new arterial roads in course of construction round Londen were described in illustrated lecture at the House, of Commons on June 5th by Major C. EL. of Brassey, Chief Engineer to the Ministry

The total length of schemes in hand he stater, 141 miles, and after the completion of these roads there remain thirty-six miles to be under- taken before the end of the programme way reached. The work under the direct control of the Ministry of Transport was estimated to cost £5,128,735, while sections under- the total taken by local authorities brought up to £9,160813, of which about half had bзen spent
ent by March 31st last. On some of the projects work is in sight for another two years. Employment has been without provided for about 30,000 men,

In thanking the lecturer, Colonel Ashley
described the (Parliamentary Secretary) and around Lon- don as both intricate and pressing. His own feeling was that the new ronds were not only urgently necessary, but that much more would have to be done. He looked forward in the near future to an enormous increase in the number of vehicles using the roads, and in twenty years' time the present road. in and out of London getting would probably be so insuficient as to be useless. The problem would have to be faced by the Ministry, with the support of bers of the House. Colonel Ashley also men- tioned that the Ministry was conferring
