DOMESTIC SERVICE
WHY IT IS UNPOPULAR IN
"GREAT BRITAIN,
In connection with the Committee of Ins quiry into the dunestic servant problem, a questionnaire has been circulated among naemployed girls registred for out of work benefit with a view to obtaining authorita- tive eridance on the masons that weigh with woon in rejecting domestic service. The replies received in writing, or given verbally to the investigaturs, indieste a great variety of reasons, among them being | The following :-.
TOO MICH RESTRAINT.
Aloist without exception the absence of personal freedom out of reasonable working hours is dwelt on. Girls in Avery way qualifies for domestic service say that they cannot erlure it under existing conditions, being at all times too muck under contral of their mistresse who are said to interfere with thons in their lokguffairs, in their friendships, and to intrude too much on their leisure agents when they happen to be still in the" hogy.

QUESTION OF DIGNITY.
Quite a number of the girls questioned dwell on the way in which domestic ser- vants are looked down on," They insist that, contrary to general belief, men, ur not partial to girls in service in selecting their wives. Complaint is also made of the manner in which servants are held up to rilicule on the stage and in comic papers. Among other points mentioned as being responsible for the unpopularity of domestic service aro:Preference of women for work. ing under men, alave driving on the past of Distresses, who are accused of penalising the girl who works hard to finish the daily routine by funding her nething else to do instead of allowing her the reward of liligence in more leisure: liability to in- salts from inale decupants of the houses in which they work; and lack of reasonable facilities for shopping during the day..
THE DOMESTIC TROUBLE. Farl Bathurst, presiding on May 16th, at the annual Treting of the Domestic Servanta Benevolent Institution, said that there was great difficulty in inducing young servanta to join, that excellent society, whose purpose it is to provide in old age, in return for a small
