· NATIONALITY OF WIVES. POSITION ALTERED BY RECENT EVENTS

A correspondent writes to the Times as follows:-

By the law of this country na it stands to-day, a woman on her marringa com- nequires the nationality of her

pukorily British woman by the net of

marriage with an alien loses her British nationality and assumes that of her husband. An alien woman, on marrying a British subject, acquires British

she remained British. If an alien woman married a British subject he remained an alien. In 1944 an Act was passed providing tha an Alien woman on marrying a British subject should become a British subject. There was no provision in that Act for the loss of British nationality by a British woman upon marriage with an alien. Such a provistes Brat occurs in the Naturalisation Act of 1870, and was continued in the Naturalisaton Act of 1914.

The debates in Parliament on the discus- sion of the Act of 1670 show that, at that time, apart from questions of rights of pro- perty, nationality was regarded largely as a matter of sentimens. Inasmuch as th Act of 1870 viable au alien to hold land în this country, the loss of British nationality an by a British woman on marriage with alien was not regarded as matter of:

of serious importaner. There was little or no ting of opinion that the high privilege of British nationality should be carefully guardel for reasons wholly apart from pro- perty.

NEW DIFFICULTIES.

The whole position has been profoundly altered by recent events, The worldwide war has brought to light the real sigui ficance of nationality, and the kindre topic of allegiance Further than that The recognition of the rights and status of women has, in the last few years, under- gone a great development. I need only point to the recent grant of the franchise to women, the recent legislation for equalis- the civil rights of men and women, and the modern views na to the rights and daties of women in the State. Grare phjections to the existing law has emerged into proinience.

ROYAL ACADEMY ROMANCE. FIRST OIL WORK BY A WOMAN OF. 71.

There will be at least one outstanding picture at this year's exhibition of the Royal Academy, saya a London paper. It is a little seascape by Mrs. H. Barnett, who is 1, and began painting in oila lusg. than three months ago. Mrs. Barnett is the widow of the late Canon S.. A. Bar- nett, ofTarabee Hall, Whitechapol, and the Hampstead Garden Suburb. Her in- terests bave ranged over such subjecia as art, teaching, garden suburbs, plays, pageante, and Poor Law, She has published books on subjects so diversa

"How to mind the baby" and "The place of women in philanthropy, and now she has taken to painting in oila

She is now in the country, but hor Secretary explained how the Academy picture came to be painted:

Į

"It is a simple little thing-just a sea- tape with a ship, and is quite imaginary. Mr. Barnett has painted in water colours and gone in for sketching for quite a long time Gut it was only in February that she thought she would like to work in oila, and this picture is one of the very first she has painted,

"It did not take long, for she works very quickly, and when the picture was finish-d-her friends advised her to send it to the Academy,"
