The rapid development of export trade not to use these except with the mercial centres of China and abroad.

in recent years and the moustact opening up of new markets in foreign countries have greatly complicated the problem of protecting trademarks, the reason being that the systems of trade-mark protection obtaining in the various countries of the works are widely different. They differ not only in detail, but in the fundamental principles upon which they are based. The tablishment of the International Enion for the Prolection of Industrial Property in 1843 has melted in ani- formity in certain matters. The scope of the Convention establishing the union is. however, very limited, and the provisions dealing with the suppression of acts of unfair competition are so vague in their terms that comparatively little progress

has been maale.

FAR-REACHING AMENDMENTS.

The International Convention is due to be revised either in 1924 or 1925 at an official conference to be held at the Hague. This conference will also consider the revision of the Arrangement of Madrid of 1891 for the International Registration of Trade-marks and the Arrangement of Madrid for the Sup- pression of False Indications of Origin."

At previous official conferences the traders of many countries have not had an op portunity of expressing their views as to what amendments should be incorporated in the Conventions, and the initiative has been largely left in the hands of the various Gay ernment Departments concerned. As the result of the work of the Chamber, however, a number
