CENSUS RETURNS FOR GREAT BRITAIN.
Lesbos, April 10th. The census returns for the countica are gradually nearing completion, and show the remarkable fact that, whereas accord- ing to the rocent general census, in the whole of England and Wales women are in a majority el 9.5 per cent, they are in a minority in many places,
notably in the counties of Durham, Lincolnshire, Mon- mouth, Brecknock and Chamorgan, and that in only seven out of 81 county broughs, do males exceed females.
The proportion of males to females, how ever, is much higher in urban and rural districts, and the Assistant Registrar- General is of opinion that the reason for the excess of males in any district is purely economic, or due to such mattera as the presezen of a military station or a large boys' school, while males generally predominate in mining districts and purely agricultural areas.
PROPOSED TAX ON BETTING.
LONDON, April 11th. Among the taxation proposals which Mr. Stanley Baldwin is considering, and which he is reported to favour, is a tax on betting.
The Customs Department of the
Treasury has been enquiring into the question during the past few weeks, such a tax being regurd
kindred to the Entertainment Tax which the Customs Department administers.

hepartment is not dealing with the
of the tax, but merely with it is practical, and the methods of Their application and the possible yield. report as to yield is believed to be favourable.
In the nsvipapers, the tax is calculated to
between $10,000,000 and £20,000,000. Filention of policy remains, and must be decided by the Cabinet, Already, formidable opposition if
