THE MURDER TRIAL.

PRISONER IX

THE BOX.

The case for the Crown in the murder

trial, which was opened on Monday at the Supreme Court, was

concluded, yesterday morning, and Mr. Campbell Presser for the defence commenced his case by placing the prisoner, Wu Kwong Cheung, in the witness-box,

In his statement, the prisoner anid

that he was a seaman by trade! He gave his age as 20 years. On February of last he was employed as a servant at No,'l 40, Prayn West. He had been there ubcut

The mystery was that, this woman was shop after she was bound and’gagged and the mystery deepened when they came to

the fact that four shots were fired. One shot was found in the woman, but there' were still three inaccounted for, In- spector Kent had said that there was no trace of the missing bullets.

Counsel pointed out that it was quite porsible that the woman was killed by a ricochet buffet. The vase, he added, would have been much bincker against him if only one bullet had been fired.

The Attorney-General suggested that the reason for the murder was that the deceased was troublesome and argued with the prisoners, who in a state of Pervous tension and fear of interruption

had fired at her.

His Lordship, in summing up, address-

pointed out" that where two or mure sent out the servant girl on an errand,

Mr. Campbell Prosser: Why did you persons combined to commit an unlawful act and, in carrying out that unlawful act death was hrought about then all the persons who were parties to the common object were guilty of murder. If the Jury accepted the prisoner's own story, in law, he was guilty of murder.

The prisoner: Because, I intended to steal things there,

Tid you arrange to sten] by yourself or with someone else?—I had arranged with somebody to steal things therc.

Who was the ather person --That was Lai Chuồn,

The prisoner went on to say that Lam Chuen arrived at the house about 3

hid you have the revolver at the time when you let him into the house-He

had the revolver when I let him in.

The prisoner then said that Lam Chuen had the revolver going up the

stairs. He weat on to describe how they

ordered the two women into a small room

The fact that the prisoner gave Lam Churn the fully loaded revolver made him every bit as guilty us if he had fired the shot. But the Crown contend- ed that the prisoner used the revolver.
