STEAMANI AGENTS AND SHIPBROKKES,
A Geneva FuPa states that Peter Taugwalder, the well-known Zermatt guide, died last month, aged 81.. He was the only survivor of the Matierbory disaster of July 14th, 1863. The secret of the Whymper For the Purchase, Sale and Charter of Vessels tragedy is thus maintained, and it will never of any Tonnage, Passenger and/or Cargo, New ba known if Tangwalder out the rope inndur Old, with delivery Chins at Very Low order to save his own life, as Eduard Prices. Whymper asserted, or whether the ripe, which was old and worn, parted under the strain of holding four nien dangling over the glacier. Taugwalder afterwards never passed the spot without a short, silent | prayer. He had child the Matterhorn 125 times since the accident without mishup.
'
The tragedy of the Matterhorn occurred after the first successful ascent had been achieved by a party consisting of Lord Francis Douglas, Kev. Charles Hudson, Mesurs. Bobert Hadow, and Edward Whymper, and two guides, Michael Croz and Peter Taugwalder, and two yong of the latter. Mr." Whymper's story of the tragedy. was as follows: "The greatest care was being taken. Only one man was moving at a time; wha be was firmly planted the next advanced, and so on. The average distance between us was probably twenty feet. As far as I know at the m0+ ment of the accident no one w » actually moving. I cannot speak with certainty, nei ther can the Tangwalders, because the two leading then were partially hidden from our ! sight by an intervening mass of ruek. Poor Croz had laid aside bis aze, and, in order to give Mr. Hardow greater security, was abso lutely taking held of his legs, and putting his feet, one by one, into their proper posi tions. From the movements of their shoul ders it is my belief that Cruz, having dopr

All this was the work of a moment; but imbie- diately we heard Cróz's exclamation Taugs walder and myself planted ourselves firmly as the rocks would permit; the rope was light between us, and the shock came on us both as on one inan. Wa bold, but the rope broke midway between Tanz. waulder and Lord Francis Dougins.. For
two or three seconds we aw our fortunate companions 'sliding downwards on their backs, and spreading out their bands endeavouring to save themselves. They disappeard one by one, and fail from precipive to precipico on to the Matterhorn glacier below, a distance of nearly 4000 feet. From the moment the rope broky it was impossible to help them For the space of half-an-hour wo remained on the spot without moving a singlo step. The two men, paralysed by terror, cried like infante, and trembled in such a manner as to threaten us with the fate of the others.
For more than two hours afterwards
I thought every moment would be my last; for the Tangwälders, utterly unnerved, were not only incapable of giving assistance, bat were in, such a state that a slip might have been expected from one or the other at any moment."

health is contributed by Dr. Leonard 67. QUEEN'S ROAD CENTRAL, Williams, a physician of European re- putation, to the Empire Review on the
Spahlinger treatment of tuberculosis.
Spahlinger is a Swiss lawyer, who shortly before the war turned to science and pre- pared a serum which, after severe tests, scems to be a sovereign cure for tuber- culosis.
It is a blend of some 20 anti-toxins, or. anti-bodies, prepared by inoculating as many horses with tho 20 distinct species of germs which Spablinger discovered in victims of tuberculosis. Dr. Williams says:--
If this completo serum is injected into the body of a human being suffering from tuberculosis, the horses' anti- bodies will immediately set to work to acutralisa the toxins with which the bacilli are killing the human being. Spahlinger, stumbled upon a fact which is of considerabe interest. It is that the type of horas which is the best anti-body manufacturer is a well- bred horse of dark colour, of the Irish huater type.
Manufacture of the 'serum is a matter qf years, and was delayed by the war and want of funds. But now the British Red Cross Society has come to Spahlinger's aid, and in time a good supply will be forthcoming. Dr. Williams hopes that we may be
