HOW TO SUCCEED

THE NAVY.

The amusing instructions, of "Nautions" en "How to Succeed in the Navy" are continued in the Nautical Magazine. The writer is advising the juniori upan their behaviour when on watch:

The trick of diverting attention from yourself should be cultivated, as it is most ureful For instance, you will find that when the Officer of the Watch has forgotten to send in a boat for the Commander, thereby keeping him waiting on a draughty pier in. the pouring rain for perhaps three-quarters of an hour, he will at once accuse you of having omitted to call it away. You will im mediately reply that you gave strict orders to the quartermaster to call it away well up to time. He in turn will probably take it out of the sideboy, but that is neither here nor there.

Another most important part of watch keeping is that of making cocon for the Officer of the Watch during the night watches. If you can produce at frequent intervals a steaming cup of cocoa, su will not only gain his friendship, which may be useful on occasions, but, with any luck, should the ship be in harbour, he will retire to the ward room to drink it. This leaves you free to light a cigarette. and once more telling the quartermaster. to "carry on." you can retire to the n ronni, from whence (if you are lucky), the quartermaster will call you before the Officer of the Watch returns on deck. Should the ship bi area it is nat advistble that either you or the Officer of the Watch should go below, as nt, the subsequent court martial, after the ship! has rammed her next ahead, the members of the Court are apt to take an unduly pessimistic view of your absener from the bridge, which is likely to have far. reaching effects on your seniority.

When making cocon for the Officer of the Which at sea, always make we of the well fitted and comfortable chart house, which is obviously erected for the pur pose. It is alro as well to bear in mind. that Navigating Offerre generally have a ridiculous regard for the varnish of the chart-house table, the beauty of which is liable to be impaired if hot cocoa is spilled over it. Many a life-long friendship has sprung up between na enthusiastic, Mid- shipman of the Watch and a livery Navigating Officer, through the Midship man having had the kindly thought of protecting the varnish by placing the cocos on one of the Navigator's carefully

corrected charts.

To "time" the ball is one of the ultimate secrets of stroke-production, as both players and prophets agree. But what exactly is this timing." and how is it to be at tained?

The phrases imply that there is just one fraction of a second in which the perfect stroke can be made. Where is that fraction, and how do we get, to it A certain amount of time is normally taken in winding up" for the, stroke and in making the stroke: "timing" the ball should mean hitting it at the moment during these combined, periods at which the minimum of effort will produce the maximum of result,

There is another thing-the movement of the club-head is accelerated as it gets to the ball, and should make impact when the acceleration is at its bighest. It will be found that this occurs just when the, club- head has reached its lowet point and is beginning to ascend. This is the contral moment of the stroke; psychologically and physiologically it is also when effort seems Lo cense and the battle to be won!

But a final paint to be considered. When all this in worked out we find that this timing is really placing the placing of the ball where it can best be dealt with, the placing of the movement of the club, and the placing of the player himself so as 'beat to carry out the desired result.

The whole thing is a curiona little illus- tration of Einstein--time and place are in a way the same; is particular to get the timing correct you must first get the correct, placing. This applies to many mundane matters besides golf-Opatrner,
