THE RESTORATIONS DY NEBUCHADNEZZAR

BAGHDAD, March 5th. Excavations at the temple of the Moon God at Ur of the Chaldees have dow olosed down for the season. It is hoped! to resume work in the autumn, and in' the meantime the temple is being guarded- by Arab lovics.

The temple had a continuous existence for three thousand years. In the ruins of one chainber, probably the innermost shrine, a valuable hoard of jewelry was discovered, including many bracelets and One tiled necklaces, mostly of gold. courtyard equipped with a gutter is believed to have been the site of ancient blood sacrifices

Certain evidence available recalls the statements made by Herodotus in his description of Babylonish temple worship as to the presents within the procincts of the sacred building of a considerable number of women, who sat in a row in the courtyard and were obliged to bestow favours on Buy man who gave them coin, irrespective of its intrinsic value.

The major part of the excavations were made, in the south-east corner of the j mound. It soon became apparent that the portion of the temple discovered by Dr. Hall in us was merely the terrace of the main building, which lay under- neath. The upper bricks were of Nabu- immediately chadnezzar's period, but underneath them were bricks of a much cartier period. It is obvious from the appearance of the walla that Nebuchad nezzar in rotoring the temple, left un- touched as far as possible the original foundations.

The results of the excavations at Ur have more than repaid the cost so far incurred. It is greatly to be hoped that suficient funds will be forthcoming for the completion of this most valuable work-Times

Ur is one of the oldest cities in Babylonia, and therefore in the world. Like its rival cities of Erec and Nippur, its origin is lost in antiquity; but it was at its zenith about 3,000 B.C, and the temple of the moon-god Nannar or Sin (the same word appears in the name Sinal), the subject of the present excavations was found by Ur-Engur, who Cr-Engur ruled as far back as 2,400 .c.
