Carroll's large as at some of the meetings held last Ver. H.E the Governor (Sir R. E. Stubbs, R.C.M.G.) arrived in time to witness the first race in which Dempsey (Mr. Harriman), strongly backed for place, came in first and paid, $38.00 for a win.

On the whole it was a day for outsidere, and only one or two of the favourites did what was expected of them, and with the exception of the Gymkhana Stakre, the Polo Scurry, and the last race of the meet- ing the 11 mile race-the likely winners Failed This meant that, some very good -dividends were paid. In the sixth race, over one mile, the favourite Royal Con- queror (Mr. Gibson up) was beaten by a rank outsider, Messrs. Potta and Croucher's Petrol King (Mr. Poils up). The pony beat Royal Conqueror by two lenglas and paid a dividend of $338.60 for a win. APLICHAU IN FLAMES, THIRTY HOUSES DESTROYED.

A huge red glow in the sky emanating from the other side of the Island excited 猫 good dest of curiosity amongst passengers on, the Kowloon ferries on Saturday evening. The glow was cast by the flames of a fire which destroyed: half the village of Aplichan,-an. island just of Aberdeen Fire broke out in s house in the main road about oight delock, ng the result of a nineral bil lamp being overturned. The inmates of the house appeared to have done very little towards "extinguishing the flames, with the result that the whole houso' caught fire. The villago is a small one, and all the dwellings and shops are packed very densely, Ag there was. A strong breeze at the time, the firo soon.

alarm spread. The

was given, and within a very short time Sub-Inspector oaoWalters was on the scene with the Aberdeen fire float. Ho and his met worked hard, and immediately sent a mestage to the Cntral Fire Station. In- spector Moss at unce took the fro float which is usually to be seen at the Victoria Ferry Wharf, and proceeded to the scene of the outbreak. This wat he at about a quarter to nine, and within on hour and a quarter he was on the scene and at work. By this time half the village was in famos, and the majority of the inhabitante had run away. There was no water laid on, and it was imposible to bring the float up close to the land. Consequently. he had to lay some hundreds of feet of any hose across junky and sampans, and 1st, then for, we yards along the street, The water used was necessarily son wäter, which; of course, had to bo pumped up. He only had eleven firemen with him, and received very little help from the people abase homes were burning. The In 3pector sized up the situation, and after a short conference with Sub-Inspector MacWaltern, it was decided that the big 7 fost should work from the end of the village and then along the road, and the other float should take the half way stage and prevent the fines from As the village is spreading further. little more than a single street affair, and ne it was bounded on one side by, water,

need to think about the blaze-spreading sideways. The plan worked successfully, and the flames were got under control in less than a couple of hours. This did not mean that the work of the firemen was finished, however, and they worn at their task fighting the fire till nine o'clock the next morning. The difficulty of the task can only be appreciated when it is realised that the houses on both side. of the street, wore in flames, and the firs fighters had to do their work in between the rows.

Over thirty houses were burned to the ground, and at least three hundred people hair beca rendered homeless. 2The exact extent of the damage is not yet known, but roughly an area of 500 feet was covered with fire. Long flames rose skywards, and a most remarkable effect was obtained upon the clouds, which, at the time, were lying very low. The view. from Mount Kellett was particularly inspiring. A whole village or so it appeared, lay in flacces beneath.

How much damage, exactly, has been done, it is at the present time impossible to say, but it is known that many of the buildings were uninsured.
