WOMEN IN CHINA. **

DRESS AND WESTERN STYLES.

The Oriental Circle of the Lyceum Club hold a dinner on the evening of February 19th, Mrs. Chrimpton Giles presiding There are several speakers, amongst them the Japanese Ambassador, Baros Hayashi, who said that Chios, opened up by railways, had a great future, and when this was done, there would be no unemployed in this country. His Excel- lency was followed by Mr. Chao-Hris Chu, Chinese Chargé d'Affaires, London, who, in the course of his remarks, said:

I dare not criticise the Western fashists of women folk, but I never admire any unnecessary imitation by the Chinese ladies of Western fashion, which, from my conservative' point of view, not The agreeable to Chinese, customis. - Chinese ladies' dresses are quite good enough, and they are nowadays quite Inskistable "aven in the Western woolal osaires. Only the other day, at the opting of Parliament I saw several ladies, besides my wife, had dressed them selves in Chinese style, "wettring beauti fully disored and embroidered long gowns; they did not order Chinese gowns with low necks. But some so-called new §. types of Chinche ladies have lowered their' socks; they have altered their beautiful alothes in order to be fashionable, record ing to Western ideas. As to high heels; in old days the Chinese ladies wore en broidered shoes, Of course, at that time they had their feet bound; and the smal shoes looked like a new moon. They alsd had high heels, but they were different to the French style. Chinese women of the present generation have natural foef, because they were fortunate enough to be born after the abolition of, foot-binding But same have their leather sole specially made, adopting the "Western style and Imitating the French heels.

'I do not know whether any of you have seen the dress of a Manchu lady. She wears embroidered shoes with high in- step; she dresses her baie in the style of a high coiffure; she wears floral jacket and long gown made of silk with embroidery around. I should say if such a beautiful dress was exhibited at any society function, it would attract all. eyes, and if there should be a contest of beautiful dresses, such dress would win ane of the prizes:

PRESENT-DAY. WOMEN,

Chinese girls have been modernisedi Those who are in the oities, if not in the country, you will seo go to schools the same as the boys.. They do exercises and ghastics and play games with grace in performance to their infinite benefit. Some of them interest themselves in-politics; so-called sufragettes are found in different parts of China. We shall soon have the feminist with us fancy we have her now.. If you will go to the University of Peking, you will see a number of women students pursuing advanced studies. Many Chinese girls went abroad, for education, Some years ugo" they wont to Japan and then some were sent to America, and now more will be coming over to England Thanks to the British Government, who have inti mated their intention to return the Boxer. Indemnity, to be devoted to the promotion of education, I hope that wo men's claims will not be entirely over- Tooked in the distribution of funds to stimulate the acquisition of Western.

owledge They come over here, not only to take up dearestia science, but also music, literature, economics, as well as tw. Some of them will be "turned out women economists...“. aņā” · some :“pomen barristers.

1. venture to assert that China must in the future look to her women. There is one bill before your Parliament of which I am a warm supporter.. It is Sex 2 Disqualification Abolition Ki-a dread- fub title I admit which placage both man! and women on an equal-footing: They tell me that you haven't quite gut Y complete equally yet, but I am sure that, little as I know about women? I do know their pertinacity, their enthusiasm and their keenness, and if I were an Englishe man I think I should yield at once and give you ladies all you want now,

I regret Mrs. Charis unable to be present, and she has asked meta/express] hon sincere thanks for the polita invita tica extended to ber.. The reason she does not come is because she does not speak the language, otherwise really she ought to be making this spooch instead of me, since we are in the Ladies' Club. Let me say, we in China want to be understood We have our good qualities, and I beg of t fou not to think that either the film or the drama gives you a very exact opinion bf what we are. I do not think that all events, it does sometimes seem that, literature is much kinder to us, but, it admits that we are not quite the wild miss azul wild-women of the Far Eäst, I xui sure you, do not think we are. You have invited us here so good types, riot an curiosities.

I quite agree with the Japanese Ambas Andor, who has expectations” ofTMt seeing Ching.spen up economicaly I also thank His Excellency for his sympathy in the political troubler now in China. Chỉñá 19 a new country is a Republic; she is now in the transition stage of recomtrue" tion and reorganisation. It takes time to sot her house in order, she has a great task in the work of toonomis development and universal education. For this work time mifit be allowed, and patience must beysustaineḍaflat de
