EGYPT'S ANTIQUITIES. KINGS FUNERAL CHARIOT.

SHEATHED IN GOLD

Loxon, February 3rd.

One of the most splendid treasures ever found in the tombs of Egypt's ancient kings was brought back to the light of day this morning when, shortly after noon, the body of one of Tatankhamen's funeral chariots was taken out of the Royal mausoleum. It was the main part of

the bady, the dashboard

so to sheathed in beavy sheets of pure gold, ly chiselled in relief, and set with in- tricate designs of semi-precious stones. In the centre of the dashboard the

The richness of the decoration and the beauty of the work caused a gasp of as tonishment from the crowd of spectators! who, awestruck, watched the treasure emerge from the tomb.

Lord Carnarvon affirms that the "Usbabel". or small image of King Tutankhaine which was taken out of the tomb yester day is probably the finest piece, from the antiquarian standpoint, that the sepulchre contains. Howard Carter, for the thieves of the SHANGHAI OFFICE — 18th dynasty had not overlooked this obvious receptacle of treasure. It is greatly regretted that the King's parse was not found, as it is believed that there is only one example known to exist.

AN' ALADDIN'S CAVE,

Like Aladdin's cave, piled bigh with trea suras, the "laboratory of the tomb," where the chemist, 3r. Lucas, is depulverising and giving preservative treatment to Tutank hamen's funerary furniture, is now all but full. The showiest a Imost

Another beautiful piece in the labo- ratory tomb is a large, solid gold scarab still attached to one of the Royal gar- ments. This kingly robe is red-brown with age, and will require the most care- ful chemical treatment before it can be lifted from the box in which it was MẠ moved from the tomb-Reuter.

EGYPTIAN FASHIONS IN PARIS.

The recent discoveries in the Valley of the King's are to have a marked effect on Paris fashiona

The Egyptian style is particularly noticeable in the dress exhibitions which are now being held almost daily round about the Rue de la Paix. Many of the robes resemble the dresses depicted on the frescoes which illustrated la vie élégante of thousands of years ago. There is a warmth of colour and wealth of gold that particularly strike the visitor, to the. mations de la mode. The names suggest the work of Lord Carnarvon and Mr. Howard Carter. There are the robe Rameses, the cape Semiramis, the after- noon frock Sourire du Nil, and an even- ing gown which is named Nuit der Pharaons The line of the dressce clings, tightly to the form, and long sleeves end in a vapoury volant. There are apron- like effects and rich embroideries, Thero is, therefore, Bittle doubt that the tomb of Tutankhamen will this econ inspire the modern mode-Timer."

It is finally announced that the mar ringo, of the Duke of York with Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, will place at West. minster Abbey on Thursday, April 26th.
