"THE HEIGHT OF BLISS. SCHOOL-CHILDREN'S IDEAS OF

ROYALTY.

Some amusing glimpses of the London child's mind are given in the Report, issued recently, of the Chief Examiner af iba London County Council on the examinations held in 1971, and 1928 for the award of Junior County Scholarships, "The Great Fire of London was caused by a lighted cigarette falling in a, tin of patrol in a garage," was one contri- bution to history. Another boy contend- ed that the conflagration started in a Fried fish shop, while a third asserted that St. Paul's Cathedral was built by Christopher Columbus Other "howlers" montioned are :----

"The Battle of Trafalgar-square- was fought in London against the Spaniards. One of those who fell in the battle was Nelson:"

"The present-day King was only a little street-runter. Then, his uncle offered to bring him up, and now he has,, gained this high position"

"Trafalgar-square was where the battle of Hastings was fought."

"London was spoilt by the Gmat Fire. It is much worse now than it used to be."

"Chaucer was born in London-ha translated the Bible-ho was put in jail and after doing nothing for some time came to the conclusion he might as well write another book, and then wrote the Pilgrim's Progress."

In the English paper the first task set was to write an account of how you would spend your day if you were King and Queen." The Report says that can- didates too ofter, made the mistake of Assuming that the position of being King would mean unlimited money and motor- cars, etc., and so merely gave an account of such pisces as they would like to go and see, and many of them gave such a list as would take months or years to accomplish. Ono or two quotations illustrate this:-

"I should give all the miners the sack for not working and", would hang the Kaiser."

#

"I would sit on the throne, and shout at the servants, if they were not doing their work and would give them the sack!" (sitting on the throne seemed to be the height of bliss to many, cepecially girls}."

"I should have my children taught to be obedient and tidy and respectful, and also Arithmetic and other sub- jecte,"

'..

The boys' ideal was often a day of sport shooting squirrels and fores, attending racemeetings and betting, shaking hands with footballers, etc. While both sexes were very keen on meals at a restaurant, e.g., "I should have boiled cod for tea. Very often the description of the day was a list of things to ent.

Los imagination was shown in men-t tioning a Queen's relaxations. The frequent general idea seemed to be attendance at balls and banquets; the personal comfort afforded by a multitude q servants, the softest of feather beds." "unlimited scented soap," and "a super-i Buity of ices and jellies.

The pleasures described were chiefly pleasures with which they were fully se quainted. eg., riding round London on u bus: visiting all the museums, or fairs, jor " Madam, Two Swords. Waxworke

consuming inaumerable and ill-amorted Imeals (one boy's idea of blisa was "Roast chicken, ginger pop, and plum cake for breakfast), and even spending a day at hop-picking.

COMPOSITION MYSTERY. CAN IT BE TAUGHT TO SCHOOL CHILDREN 1

In connection with the "Teachers' World" lecture demonstations which have been held recently at the Connaught Rooms, London, Mr. Fank Jonce carluded a serios of lectures on the teaching of English.

ני

Composition, he said, was undoubtedly & most difficult branch of English teach ing. Compostion was self-expression, Great writing could only be done under great stress of emotion-what the Greeks called "Ecstasy, which meant, literally, a standing out of one's self. "When you are beside yourself, that is

the

time to write," said the lecturer. Old-fashioned composition failed because' there was go imperative urge:** You asked a child to write about Spring. You could not expect the child to get excited about it, the result was partion-

·larly wooden. The first requisite, of composition should be reality. Children abould be entouraged to write real letters to real persons. The great proportion of boys nowadays left school without having the nous to know exactly how to address: an envelope.

One of the greatest mistake in regard to the teaching of young children, said Mr. Jonce, was not to begin straight away." with puctuation Children of Even or eight to learn when to put full- stops in...

Alluding to the choice of words, "Mr. Jones made a faference to the type of ponon who would use the word.

nick" to describe a sunset, & sonata, or a rice pudding. (Laughter.) This should be rectified by the dictionary habit. Teach era should inmicate the use of the diction ary, and if possible, the delicato apprecia. tion of the right word.
