TASK FOR THE TEACHER

the Conference of . Educational Associations at University College December 29th, the Rev. the Hon. Edward! Lyttelton, formerly headmaster of Eton, speaking before the Eugenica Education Society in the physics theatre, said the eugenics movement was ad- vancing more slowly than many, would like. This was due to a certain amount of distrust in the minds of the public, and also to the inherent difficulty of the subject. “We ought not to be surprised,”. be "remarked, "at finding no support. In this country for anything which has to do with: knowledge. We belong to a great race—I; am still, able to: sayakhat--but in in a race which has a profound disbelief in knowledge. We distrust a man who knows too much, and we distrust any body who has been through a long and elaborate training: for... his work in life unless” be keeps the fact dark. The caly exception to that is the medical profes gion, Most of the public are very glad to [know' that doctors are thoroughly prepared for their work in life."Anyone who had looked into the subject of eugenims for the last forty years knew that there was an immense" amount of appallingunhappiness, and misery and loss of strength and vigour due to the simple fact that young people were allowed to grow up without over being taught the laws of Nature and the laws of God about the treatment of their owà bodies; but the movement was opposed; or only feebly supported, because the subject was thought, to be perilous. People could not be brought to see that there was a duty on parents of the plainest possible kind, and if parents would not take" upon themselves the proper treatment of the subject, then the teachers had to think about it.

There is no doubt," said Dr. Lyttelton, that we need not be scrupulous about preaching the responsibility of parents in regard to that matter. The facts are ascertumed. It is known that the proper teaching can be given; in fact, it is made so easy now that I do not think anybody aeed fool afraid of blundering, as they did at first, and, in their zeal, perhaps did more harm than good." He went on to emphasise the importance of noi letting boys become nervous about their own health. He would, however, rather that u boy bolted his food and played the folia every, way than that he should became retrospective. Our love of in- direct ways in England was so marked that we bad kept the subject away from boys at school so vigorously that they did not know there was such a subject. Wo gave them such a healthy life that, while they were at school they kept well, as a general rule, but the worst of it was that they faced life afterwards profoundly ignorant of the rules of health.

HEALTH CERTIFICATE FOR MARRIAGE, Of the proposals made within the eugenics, movement that, which appealed to him most was the one that they should agitate for

health certificate being necessary before marriage. "I cannot sec," he said, "that that would do any thing but good. There is no question about it that the proper teaching of the sacredness of marriage ought to begin

there fairly carly, and

Bre broad principles to be laid down in regard to that great subject which boys of 18 can perfectly understand, and, what is more, we have done the most frightful injury, to society in the broadest possible way by neglecting to do so. The condition of public opinion in regard to marriage at the present day is enough to cause pro- found anxiety everywhere; and, re- member, that while the Church and the State are wrangling about the subject of divorce, both have neglected their plain duty in training young people to under- stand what marriage is before they get married. There has been a most appall ing neglect in that one subject alone. I hold that no headmaster or headmistress of a big school" ought ever to allow the older pupils to leave school before boing: given some principles which they will have very soon to consider in regard to the view they will have to take of the great institution of marriage and the responsibilities connected with it." more than a small percentage of parents would ever do their duty in the matters bo had touched upon, nad the responsibility was very largely thrown upon the teachers.

A TRAGEDY. OF THE SEA.

Not

A romantic story, was told on the arrival at Adelaide, on January 11th, of the German, sailing ship Hinscherfeldle, whose captain was attached to the German Naval Headquarters during the war.

His wife and family were on board, and the second officer became attached to the captain's daughter, but her father angrily refused his consent, Apparently the

lovers made a death compact, as during the voyage both jumped overboard at dusk while the vessel was doing ton knots îm a strong sea.

A. bont was lowered, and after a difficult¦ search the mate was found, but the girl was not seen. The man became seriously! ill as the result of his "experience. The parents of the girl were in a frenzy of grief, the captain being so stricken that the crew on their arrival demanded their discharge owing to his startling de- meanour. This, twever, wni impossible am the men are not admissible immigrants, and there is no German Congul available to advise them.
