BUILDING A NEW LONDON. BUSINESS AREAS TRANSFORMED.

A visitor to London might be pardoned if he imagined that it had recently been bombared. Buildings long familiar have vanished, others are disappearing, and There and there in the West End and the Oity there are to be son gaunt and battered walls that once enclosed shops and offices. The continunity of elegnut façades is broken by rude hoardings that enolose heapa of dusty rubble, Windows that once displayed desirable wares are | boarded up, and not infrequently the re- tarned wanderer finds that his favourite restaurant is reduced to a pile of shatter- el masonry.

But not to high explosive are these de- molitions traceable. They are evidence of the activity of the housebreaker, who facems to be awinging his hammer in Lon- don this winter to greater purpose and a greater number of places then over before. There is hardly a thoroughfare where he is not to be sono, hardly a street but echoes to the sound of "him sledge, And where the housebreaker has done his work and the architect has followed him, the builder is now hard at work, and ander his hand there rises a block of offices, an hotel, or shojia and ware- houses. It is notable that simple white" stone is generally the material he uses, and that he follows much the plain, al most severe, but entirely pleasing, design that is to be seen in the toporing build- ings in Kingsway.

It is in Lower Regent street that the housebreaker and the builder. are parti cularly activa. On both sides of that short thoroughfare radical changes are |boing" made. At the south end Mesere. Cox's Bank is almost finished. © The external scaffolding is gone, and one may see how fine aa croction it is.

AN AGONIZING SPECTACLE.

At the corner of Jermyn-street a large block of buildings has been removed, and on the hoarding that surrounds the site there are the new addresses of nearly-a score of shopkeepers, and others who re- cently did business there. There is some thing almost agonizing in the spectacle of an old building being broken up. It is as it the secrets of his life wore being forced from the stammering and_pawill ing tongue of an octogenarian. Nothing ia sacred to the men with the hammers. Candelabra, fire places, even wall papers, are exposed to the public gaze by them. Lower Regent-street is therefore a place melancholy..jadeed.

For some time past the Westminster Palace Hotel at the corner of Victoria- street-the scene of many political con: ferences and later the temporary home of the National Liberal Club has been empty and silant. It is now being refaced and let out in offices, while not far awEY the corner by the Admiralty Arch, on the Dorth side, is the site for a new building belonging to the London and Liverpool and Globe Insurance Company. At pre sent a huge boarding marks the spot. The insurance companies, in fact, contributing generously to the new build- ings of Loadon, for the Liverpool Victoris Company is to build on a site in Southampton-row.

One of the dreariest spots in Loudon for many years has been the Tivoli site in the Strand. Part of it was occupied by temporaty buildings during the war but the building of the cinematograph theatre which is to cover it now well in hand, and shoppers in this part of London have frequently been entertained. and not seldom thrilled, when watching the transport of enormous steel girders down the narrow roadway of Adam- street to # back entrance to the site. Changea on the corner of that street itself are also being made now, and round the corner in the short stretch of Welling ton-street that leads to Waterloo Bridge there is a row of old houses that is doomed,
