OUR LONDON LETTER. ANOTHER MEETING OF THE OPIUM COMMISSION.

POME DIFFICULTIES IN THE WAY OF "STATE CONTROL.

[FROM OUR OWN OCRRESPONDENT.]

LONDON, December 11th. THE ILFORD DRAMA.

I suppose the ford murdar case will find a place in the records of crime as one of the most sensational trials of modern times. It eclipsed in public in terest the Armstrong murder case and the trial of Ronald True. There was a pseudo-romantic atmosphere about this ford drama due, of course, to the re markable personality of Mrs. Thompson. Her infatuation for the youthful Bywaters, the deceit practised towards the ill-fated husband, and the paarionate love letters which she showered on her lover both in London and while he was on voyagte abroad-these and other proofs of hatred and passion, richly embroidered with melodrama, invested this story of the eternal triangle" with absorbing public interest.

GOLFERS, AND BUSSYFOOT."""

As the Pussyfoot type of mind is opposed to all forms of enjoyment, it is not sur prising that in their general attack on the pleasures of the majority they are making a dead set against all kinds of clubs. Hence the action taken by golfers, who, under the presidency of Lord Lurgan. have formed the "Golf Clubs

At the meeting. Protection Association." called to establish the Association there wors present representatives af golf clubs which number upwards of 30,000, members, and already, messages have been received from officials who have authority to speak for some 80,000 golfers.

The new Association is entirely non- party and non political Ita sole object is to safeguard golf clubs against those at- tacks on the liberty of the subject which. Lars threatened by the Pussyfook, agitation. Lord Lurgan emphasised the fact that grare danger threatens golf clubs, as in proved by certain" Tctions "recently taken in connection with the licensing of various forms of amusement in public places

The following resolution was passed with the utmost unanimity and enthusiasm at the meeting called by Lord Lurgan:- That the course of contemplated legisla tion affecting clubs should be closely watch ed by the Executive Committee with a view, to astion being taken, where necessary, to Bafeguard the interests of Golf Clubs." THE OPIUM COMMISSION,

It is reported in London that the Opinm Commission of the League of Nations is to meet again at. Geneva at the end of the first week in January. One of the principal matters to come up for con Bideration is the import certificate system in connection with the Commission's re solution on this subject calling upon each nation to ascertain the amount of opium needed for legitimate purposes of medi.
