REMARKABLE STORY FROM THE

PULPIT,

Aremarkable story of a confession of murder was told in the course of a sermon preached from the pulpit of the Chapel Royal, Savoy, by the chaplain, the Rov, Hugh B. Chapman, on December 17th, before a large congregation. Mr. Chapman was seen by representative of the Press Association next day, and be again narrated details of the story which astounded his hearers. The story was that when he was a young minister- still in the thirties, in fact he had a confession of murder by poisoning by a beautiful, woman who was well known in Bociety. Budapest journal recounts the atrange romance of Prince Hohenlobe, : the former Canon of Hermannstadt, who left that town on its becoming Rouman ian and went to the Hungarian capital, where he fell in fore with a lyceum teacher's daughter, whose acquaintance be made at a meeting of the Roman Catholic Society of Women: Although he ia a priest of the Roman Catholic Churchi he engaged himself to be married to her, and appealed to the Holy See for dis pensation He and his fiancée were waiting impatiently, until at last he went to Rome to lead for it person. So far he has not been granted it. He declared at the Vatican that, though be is passionately in love, he would sacrifice, his love at any time to the demands of religion, and renunce the marriage. If the Pope granted him dispensation he would, of course, no longer remain a priest, but in no case would he leave his faith."

Prince Hohenlohe is n well-known dignitary of the Roman Catholic Church in Eungary. He was to be the successor to the Cardinal Bishop of Transylvania, when that province was still in the hande of the Magyar. Upon his engagement he resignad all posts of honour he had held.

POPE'S NEW TIARA.

MILAN'S SPLENDID "GIFT.

The

A pilgrimage of 760 Catholics left Milan for Rome last month, in order to present to the Pope a magnificent tiara. The gift has been made possible by a subscription amounting to a quarter of a million lire [about £2,750] and a'vast number, of jewels and gold ornaments contributed by the archdiocese of Milan. The tiara was designed. by the well- known artist Senator Beltrami and wrought by the jeweller Ravasco. work was begun in June and finished only a few days ago. It is a superb piece of art. The trunk is of filigree of pure silver and is surmounted by the three crowns symbolical of the triple power of the Pontif. The leaves and fruit of the olive tree, denoting peace, are worked on the three ornamental bands of the tiara. The lowest crown is decorated with emeralds, diamonds, and rubies and gold en olive leaves, and bears, the following] dedication:

"Fib. XI. "Pontifici" Mazimo-Concivi. Eidemq. Archiep. Olim. Svo Amantias.

The topmost crown presents, instead leaver, & rope of 150 pearls-The dome of the tidra is of intricate design. Twelve, winding dames, composed of nearly four hundred glittering rubies, and twelve golden points constitute the oriflamme, which is closed, and from which rises a small diamond studded column supporting a large Indian emerald cut like the globe, and surmounted by a cross studded with precious stones. Altogether there are some two thousand precious stones on the bigra, from which "hang iwo, ribbona em- broidered by nuns.
