THE DANGERS OF SOCIETY TO HEALTH.

Lecturing on the Dangers of Society to Health at the Institute of Hygiene, Dr. Agnos Savill strongly condemned, the habits of modern society. She and seen girls, before they were worn-out and nerretired as if they were 180 The hectic life of continual excite

NEW FASHION IN WEDDINGS.
A new fashion in weddings was probably inaugurated the other day when 'n London bride wore the traditional wedding gown and wreath when she went to get married at a register office, where-amazing sight. a red carpet had been laid down and an awaing erected. Hitherto these marriages have been conducted on far from ceremonial lines.. In coat and skirt the bride would drive up or walk up, as the case might be with the lounge-suited bridegroom, and the whole ceremony would be put through with ne little. ceremony as that associated with the purchase of a railway ticket or a dog licenen. But lately the tide of fashion. for some
or another, has set strongly in the direction of these register office marriages. There has been au epidenie of them. One does not attempt to give a reason fer it: ona merely states the fact, It is an interesting, and possibly significant, social development.

WOMAN AR.A.
At the General Assembly of Acade. micians and Associates held on November 2ard, Mrs. Annie L. Swynnerton, painter, wns elected an Associate of the Royal Academy Mrs. Swynnerton is the frat. Woman to be elected to the Royal Academy since its foundation in 1768. She is not, however, the first wompan Academician for both Marie Aane Angelica Kauffmen and Mary Moser (Mfs. Lloyd) were among the original, or foundation, members, both ranking as R.A's. Angelica Kaufman died in 1807, and Mary Moser in 1818. It has long been an open secret that some of the most eminent British artists have been of opinion that Mrs. Swynnerton deser- ved to be rewarded with Academic din tinction. The late Mr. Steth, the eminent A.RA., used to say that she was ons of the six inspired British painters liv ing, and it is also well known that Mr. Sargent has always greatly admired-her powers.
SUCCESS IN LIFE
43
Dr. Percy Buck, Professor of Music at Harrow School, in giving a lecture on Psychology in the Speech Room stated:- Nearly all the people who have been successful in life have been ordinary slow people.
Success is not beating someone else, but your own self.
Education is what you've got left when. you have forgotten everything you ever knew.
The stupidest thing anyone can do is to overwork. There was the epitaph: "He tried to do too much, and did it.". Before you can hope to do a thing pro peris you must be able to do it carelessly. The greatest sin in the world is being dull. Beredom is oar's own fault.
The happiest prople seem to be those who have fewest pleasures.
There is more happiness in Whitechapel thin in Mayfair.
Pleasure, if anything, is a detriment ito happiness.
„CREMATION AND POISON:
FAMOUR DOCTORS DISCURS ARMATRONG CASE.
References to the Andstrong poison cade were made at a London Conference of the Cranation" Bociety of England.
Sir Malcolm Morris (the chairman) said:--Everyone has in mind the Armstrong case. Many persons have asked me what would have happened in this case had the body "been burned in- stead of being buried. They say there would have been no evidence on which to convict
*Bir William Willcox, adviser to the Home Office, in reply to the chairman, poke of the safeguards adopted in the Tags of creanation against burial without
doquate medical examination,
It is obvious, said Bir William, that when a person has been poisoned, all trace of the poison will disappear if the body be cremated. This danger, is goarded-against-na-far as possible by demanding two certificates from the ordinary medical practitioner, and one from specialist.
If the systear of deaths certificates was Terleed there would not be so many exhumation cases de 'there are today.
