The Home and Colonint, Stores were fined forty shillings, last month, at Hich mond Police Court for selling cocoa adulterated with arscpious oxide to the extent of one-fortieth of a grain to a pound. Rowtrees, Lid, was also fined £30 for abetting the Home and Colonial Stores.. I was stated that the cocon was a.blend of seven different cocoas, one of which was manufactured by Rowntrees. Samples were taken and Rowntrees ample was found to contain one-tenth of n grain-of-arsazions oxide in a pound of cocoa Counsel for Rowntrees, said that the firm took absolute responsibility. An impurity had been found in the carbonate of potash used for making cocoa soluble and they bad sacrifed 350 tons of cocoa affected, costing thousands sterling. It was impossible to recover the cocon sold during the past two months containing this impurity, but chemists had expressed the opinion that it could not possibly in jure any healthy consumer and that chocolates would not be affected. The cocos..Issued since August 1st was solutely free from this impurity.
