CONGRATULATION" AND CONDOLENCE.
The writing of letters of congratulation or condolence often presents itself as a task of some difficulty, and one that we are inclined to put off unduly. It is easier to rejoice with those who rejoice than to weep with those who weep

But not always is the letter a congenial one to write. On many occasions there. is aly in the amber of happiness. An engagement may not give satisfaction to friends and relations. A seventh daughter may arrive in the place of a looked for son.
The motive, also, with which the letter is written docs always give satisfaction to the recipient. Some people merely write for the conventional reason that they feel it is expected of them; others because they want something theinselves. A desire to stand well with the successful is often the driving power that prompts congratulations, and, in a worldly sense implies a compli ment. But it is safe to say that the letter which gives pleasure is the one which springs from affection and is expressed with sincerity, it is those qualities which give it charm and make it treasured.
Where they are absent the letter had best not be written. If it is imperative that it should be,, a formal intimation of pleastire is all that remains possible. Such letters are hardly worth the sending or the receiving. But a genuine one is deeply valued and probably kept. Often it u the occasion of hearing from a long-for- gotten friend or acquaintance.
If the letter of congratulation is much easier, the letter of condolence is more needed. important, because it is more Many people often hesitate over the writ ing of this. Indeed, there are some blows dealt by Fate to humanity for which, seemingly,

Those who have not suffered, a deep sorrow may think that they would rather be left alono under such circumstances." That is not the common experience of those who know the aching blank leit by a bitter grief.

A safe rule is, when in doubt whether write or not to write. The intimate note should always be struck, whenever possible. Often a letter from an old friend may recall to memory some forgotten -in- cident of bygone years.
Perhaps the most difficult of all letters is that on the death of a child, for no words in any way seem adequate to con- pensate for the tragedy of such a less
model and classic example of perfectly expressed sympathy is the letter written by Abraham Lincoln to a mother who lost five song in the war It falls to perfection the two rules which are essential in a letter of condolence; it is short, and it speaks from the heart.

It is a problem on such occasions to strike the right note. Sometimes a telegram is a short cut out of the difficulty, but more often it is the refuge of those who do not wish to expend time and literary labour on. a task that they shirk
For the answering of letters of congra tulation and condolence, one can lay down no rules.
