PARIS FASHION NOTES.

[FROM OUR BFICIAL CORRIPONDENT, ISABEL HAMRAT.]

PARIS, November 20th.

The hats for the Winter season which have already made their appearance are simple and attractive; they are also-a point which mediates are very often opt to ignora-very comfortable, fitting well on to the head and being neither so big nor so extravagant in shape as to be a nuisance...

Felt, satin-faced cloth, duvetyn and suedine are among the materials being used. Velvet is being made up into Loques and hats of the wide-brimmed, picture variety. Very often the crown is fashioned of velvet and the brim of corded velvet in a different shade; the trimming on hats made in this way takes the form of drapings of velvet rücked crossways.

The picture hat type of this Winter is inclined to be smaller than usual. It has

a stiff crown, end à brim that is broader at the-side than front or back; furthermore, the brim is inclined to band slightly all round in the style of a mushroom shape, or else turn back sharply off the face on one side. Panne is figuring as well as less ex- pensive varieties of valvet in the' make-up of this type of hat. As with the composi tion of dresses and coats this season, there ia à marked tendency to mix materials which would have seemed incongruous a few seasons back, Thus, one of the most notable successes in Lucie Hamer's collec tion is a picture-hat in almond green panne with an "insertion of pleated- ninon inlet right across the hat from ear to ear.

The marquis and tricorne shapes are ne popular sa ever with Parisian polistes. They are made, us a rule, of panne velvet and are trimmed with a cocidé of metal ribbon or with a sweeping quilt or ostrich feather. A perfectly fat rose, fashioned of silver tissue ribbon, very often takes the place of the cockade. This form of trimming is invariably perched in the front of the hat to the right side. An idea that adds an extra note of dia. tinction to shapes of this kind in a narrow binding of bourdalous (extra strong silk corded ribbon) round the outer edge of the brim. This also, doubles the life of the hat, as it hides the wire which is always inclined to fray through" after a few montha wear. A charming hat I w recently was Napoleonic in shape, and the only trimming it had was a band of black bourdalous round the brim and a atrand of the same encircled round the base. of the crown and finished in a tight little bow at the back. This almost complete lack of trimming allowed the pure, sweep- ing line of the raised brim to triumph unhampered by additional lines or colour

Another shape which is occupying the attention of designers is that of the toque, which has been inspired by the Imban turban. This was, perhaps, inevitable, aceing that Dame Fashion is showing such a preferencp this season for rich brocades, lames, and other materials of this type that lead themselves so well to the fashioning of cut-of-the-common models in hais na well as gowns, Instead of being eased or draped on to the toque shape, the material is faid on in a series of complicated rolls that twist in and out and over and under each other so that the effect of an Indian head- dress of regal proportions is obtained. Toques of this kind, fit on to the head as closely as any skull cap, they follow exactly the shape of the head, but are inclined to be rather more oval than circular, so as to take in the coil of hair at the back; some are the same height all round, but the majority are raised slightly in front.

For, girls there are cheeky-looking tain-" o'shanter shapes, made of bright-coloured velvet;. these are drawn down at the sides and are inset with patches of brocade or metal fabric shot with a colour to tone with that of the velvet of which the tam is made. These are very quaint and becoming, but care must be taken that the dress or costume which accompanies them is in koaping; otherwise, such shapes are apt to look either ludicrous or common.

The latest note in trimming is inclined to be very decided, if not savere. Fiat motifs of planted ribbon, tufts of "velours de Smyrne, motifs of fur mixed with ribbou, Bowers made of rings of pleated baby velvet ribbon or a pattern worked in loops of soutache braid or in tiny strips of doth are what one sees moat o£
