If a change is not made in the law deal- ing with actions for-breach-of promise of marriage it will not be the fault of Mr. Justice McCardie. From time to time he has attracted considerable attention by his remarkable judgments on questions dealing with ser problems. This week, in summing up in a caso before him, he made strong comments on matrimonial engagements. After referring to the consequences of us happy marriages as seen in the thousands of judicial separations granted and the congested lists of the Divorce Court, he expressed the deliberate opinion that breach-of-promise actions were degrading to women because women saked a jury to aaaces the commerical value of a man whose affection they have lost.

One of the ecotomies announced by the new Prime Minister is the abolition of the Cabinet Secretariat. The announcement is, no doubt, intended as a sop to appease those stern and unbending critics who have represented Mr. Lloyd George as a Dictator ruling the country with the assistance of the highly-trained staff he set up himself in Whitehall Gardens.
