[1894:

Another political leader whose health has been a matter of concern to his friends is Mr. Lloyd George. More than once in recent years he seemed in a condition of physical and nervous exhaustion, and his doctors advised a long rest. But he was never able to get more than a few days at a.time. Now at the end of seventeen years of a keenly contestel election bas evidently of Ministerial responsibility the prospect proved a better tonic than the medical profession could. prescribe. All who have seen him are amazed at his physical vigour and boisterous spirits. So far he seems to have benefited by the new treatment, justifying Mrs. Lloyd George's declaration that he is always in his best health when he is engaged in a fight.

There were 50,000 applications for seats at Mr. Lloyd George's meeting in Glasgow, -an extraordinary testimony to his popularity in the North.

It was understood that the Duchess of Altholl would be Unionist candidate for South Edinburgh. Apparently, however, she has been unable to secure the support of the Unionist executive of that division. The Duchess has already refuse invitations from several constituencies, and there is consequently some feeling on the matter.

There is no "Churchill affistus" in Dundee at this election. Master of resound ing phrase and brilliant,"diction, a great platform force, and an aggressive enemy of Communism in all its shapes, he is confined. to the sick-room, recovering from a operation. SHERIFF'S REMINISCENCES.

Sheriff W. D. Lyall has been delighting the members of the Glasgow Rotary Club with some reminiscences. "My lord," the breaking into a public-house at three policeman replied, the prisoner gare utterance to the following observation. He said 'Hullé!-or words to that effect." "A learned brother once told the Sheriff that auch was his admiration for law and order that his heart leapt up every time he beheld a policeman. The Sheriff in reply confessed that he remembered long ago his heart leaping when he saw a policeman-it leapt so high that it almost entered his mouth. The policeman was walking along a street in Edinburgh while he and a chem were perched on one of the street lamps engaged in the estimable occupationi of encouraging economy by subduing the illumination.

The Sheriff said he had presided in one law court after another for the preposterous period" of 32 years, aud of course, when a man sits on a bench for although it may be rather hard upon 32 years if is a great saving in shoe leather, other articles of attire which are quite na necessary.
