BRITISH KING'S' LEDGER.

HOW ROYAL ACCOUNTS ARE - MANAGED.

Only those intimistely concerned with the Royal Household can realias the, intricate financial machinery necessary to control the huge expenditure of the Court i gear by year, and therefore a few ficts on this subject may be of general interest,

The head of the financial department of the Household in the treasurer of the Household. The position is always held: by a member of the House of Commons, who changes with a change of Government. To the Treasurer is allotted each year the um assigned for the maintenance of the Royal Household. This at present-in- €198,000, with a "further 125,800 in respect of the anlarios of those employed about the Court, and the Treasurer is res-, pontible for seeing that these teams are; properly expended.

Under the Treasurer of the Household: comes the Comptroller of the Household (likewise a political appointment), who thrawn on the Treasurer for such sims as be requires from time to time. While the whale of the higher officials of the Royal Household are paid quarterly by drafts on tho Treasury, the minor ones receive their salaries monthly, and the greater part of. the domestic #AM weekly.

THE COMPTROLLER.

The Comptroller Fashia hasdquarters at. Buckingham Palace, and he is responsible for all payments at all the Royal Palaces. All the departments of the Court, and their various rub departments, have their alloted anma handed over to them, monthy or weekly. as may be required, and before the Com- ptroller issues these sume, detailed accounts Eave to be submitted to him, and passed for payment

The Lord Steward's Department is the greatest speader in the Royal Household, ince not only the whole of the domestic sta are paid from here, but also the bills for food, wine, uniforms, etc.. Next comes the Ceremonial Department, or the Lord Chamberlain Department,

it was known until quite recently." This ba its headquarters in James's Palace, and it is from here that the whole of the money necessary for the holding bf State functions, mich sa Courts, garden parties, levees, and investi tares, is provided. Another official who receives sabataatial sams from the Pay- master of the Household, is the Master of the Horse who is charged with the main- tauance of the Royal Mows at Buckingham Palace, as well as the stud farm at Windsor...

Since the King came to the Throne, his Majesty has shown his intensely business- like spirit by insisting upon having a profit and loss account of the whole of the Court expenditure prepared every half-year, and laid before him for his inspection.

For some time past there has been steady reorganisation of the administration of the Court, and when this is completed: the King hopes to have effected a sating of something like ten thousand pounds a year. Despite the general and considerable increase in the cost of living that prorails now as "compared with pre-war days, the money allotted for the maintenance of the Court remains at the same figure as at the commencement of the present reign, and the King steadfastly declined to apply to the House of Commons for any addition."

THE KEEPER OF THE 'PRIVT'PURÒ. The Department of the Keeper of the Privy Purse does not come under the survey of the Payusaier of the Household. The money received bere year by year, £110,000, is the private property of the King, and, in addition, the holder of the office. Colonel Sir Frederick-Ponsonby bandles hia. Majesty's private fortune and his revenues, from the Royal Duchy of Lancaster, together with various smaller suma. It is out of these funds that the King keeps up his private residences such as Bandring- tham. York Cottage, Balmoral, and other smaller ones.

To enter the accounts branch of the Lerd Steward's Department is like going into a large and well-conducted bank, particularly towards the end of each quarter, when accounts are literally des cending upon the clerks in shoals from almost every direction, particularly when this quarter coincides, as is the case just now with the height of the London season. There is no fuss or confusion, however, to be found here, and everything proceeds with the utmost smoothness and regularity.

4,000-YEAR-OLD TOMBS. SYRIAN ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDS.

The excavations now being carried on in Syria on the initiative of General Gouraud, the French High Commissioner, have already resulted in the discovery at Byblos of two tombs about four thousand years old

The age is established by the discovery in one of them of a harpy;-& curved; sword with a gold handle; a seat of gold: on which is engraved the Egyptian spar- row-hawk; a gold scatabene ring beauti- fully carved, and a balm box of obsidian, mounted in gold and bearing the name of Pharaoh Amenemhat of the Twelfth Dynasty. This is stated to be the oldest inscription discovered in Syria, and proves that commercial relations between | Byria, Grecon and Egypt wire already active two thousand yours before our era, The first rotorded-conquest of Syria by- Egypt was made" "by' "Thotmoed" T: (Teth- mcan) of the Eighteenth Dynasty during the mixteenth century, B.Q, :

"These precious Ends were qubmitted to the Academy of Inscriptions on October 7th.

***There appear to have been three Kings of the name Amenemhat (Amenem- (be) in the Twelfth Dynasty which endured for just over two "centuries and is vari- odaly dated by different authorities. Professor Eliadera Petrio suggeeta 3509 B.C. for its commencement, others put it as late as ‍2000. B.Q.-Times.

puts these words into the mouth of Oliver Crom- well. Here is a great maxim that the world needs to learn, and particularly that the democratic world needs to learn now.

John Drinkwater may drink water or he may drink Haig & Haig Whisky, or, indeed, anything" that he wants to drink, and let no man presume to say he shall do otherwise,

There are some things that we must not decide by a majority vote. One of these things is whether or not you, and we, and John Drinkwater shall, or shall not, drink water.

Being free people, we do not need other opinions on this. Our own opinion is all that matters.

BAIG & HAIG are publishing this advertisement throughout the world. They have two objectives !--- **

(1) To stem the tide of democratic tyranny;

(a) To forward their own business interests. They believe that they are sending all over the world the best Whisky that goes from Scotland.

Haig &Haig Five Stars

Scots Whisky

No Haig & Haig Whisky is being exported in Decanter battles.

We find it necessary to make this statement because our House was, at one time, user of this bottle. After lang experience we find that it is not a good bottle. It is easily broken, and the sizes frequently vary, to the detriment of the buyers. We discontinued its use in the interests of our customers. We sell the same high-clam quality Whisky in this bottle. We have one quality only.
