POWDERING HER NOSE,

IN ORDER TO PREVENT IT FROM

BEING SHINY...

Many of the girls of to-day are ruining their fresh young complexious by the con s'nt and promiscuous application of harmful face powders, writes a physician.

In order to realise this one has only to look at the parchment-like skins of confirmed user of "complarion Improvari "when they attain mature age.

The habit of applying powder to the face on any and every occasion has grown enormously during recent years. Originat ing on the stage, where it was used to accentuato and enhance the charm of the actress who bad to face the force glare of the footlights, it has now spread until it may be assorted with safety that there are few girls who do not carry with them a powder puf.

When one inquiries of the young girl why she uses face powder, the invariable answer is that it is in order to prevent her nose from being shiny.

A shiny nose, indeed, appears to be universally regarded by the present-day gil as a blemish to her beauty. Why this should be so is not easy to understand.

Now there is no doubt that the constant., use of face powder causes the pores of the skid to be clogged, and that if persisted in to excess it results in the cuticle becom |ing coarse and shrunken.

Thera is all the difference between scientific and unscientific powdering, and although experts unanimously declare the deleterious effects are produced by the cureless -ap- plication of heup powders, they we no les emphate in almitting that permanent burn is done by the use of i small quantity of good quality paader at not too frequent intervals:

on

Girls who use powder regularly should take the precaution of using one or other of the excellent face creams with antiseptic properties now procurable.

The best time to apply cream is on retiring at night. This will ensure the pores being kept open and aseptic, and if it be carefully removed first thing in the morning, before the face is washed, the application of powder cannot. produce any kartaful resulta.

For all that, one cannot quite com- prebend why it is that the modern girl looks upon the slightest suspicion of a shiny nose na so disfiguring. Surely it will not be contended that the appearance of a peach is any more attractive to the oye of the beholder than that of a ripe. balthy apple, in spite of the latter's shiny. exterior!

EIGHTH CHILD THE BEST.

As the result of an inquiry among a large number of boys and girls in the elementary schools of Colchester, Essex, Dr. RH Vercoe concludes that in large families the first child has the worst re- cord for disease and the eighth child and upwards the best.

*

Eighth children are inferior, to none and superior to the eldest children in mall families,

In intelligence, weight, height, and other qualities the differences are slight, but the following have been noted:-

Intelligence rises slightly from first child to third, then drops to the 6th, and rises again to the 8th child.

The tallest and heaviest children are the latest born, while the shortest and lightest are the 2nd child and the 6th

The eldest child, on an average, has the lightest coloured eye, while the 8th child has the darkest.

In' defects of vision the 1st and 2nd children are the worst, while the 3rd child comes out best.

In general defects the 1st child isi slightly the worst and the 8th child by far the best

In the inquiry, of which the results are driven in the Lancet familes with fewer

than four children were not included.
