At the Church Congress at Sheffield, on October 10th, the Bishop of Birmingham presided over a discussion on "The Natural and the Supernatural,” and addresses - were given by Canon Peter Green, the Res. 67, QUEEN'S ROAD CENTRAL A. J. Tait, and the Rev. Olenant Rogers. ~~Canon Peter-Green, of Manchester, said that the naturalist claimed that the vagaries of individuals, the complexities of the living world, would in time be reduced to law. We only needed time to arrive at an “exsot” biology and psychology, as we had already arrived at an exact" mathematics and physics. And the conquest of mind over matter was always within the mechanical framework, so to speak, and subject to mechanical law. Both those statements were unproved, and both, be believed, were untrue," ́Anything which was truly the manifestation of "spirit" or "personality" was unique; and the unique defied the law, since" a natural law was an observed uniformity, and what was unique was not uniform with anything else. The more clearly natural science displayed maa's body as a machine, the more impassable was the gulf between that machine " and the spirit that controlled it; and no physiology of the brain ever began to
in over Des bridge that gulf.
Was control of matter by spirit outside the organism possible? In his book on Psychical Research, Sir W. F. Barrett said

QUESTIONS IN HYDE PARK.
The Bev. Clement F. Rogers, Professor of Pastoral Theology, King's College, University of London, dealt with questions put to him during a course of lectures in Hyde Park on Sunday afternoons on "The Evidences of Christianity." He declared that the question of Free Will was the one most frequently raised. In one period, at practically every Sunday meeting, it ap peared in the forms, "Why does God allow War!" Hardly less often the question of Free Will come up in question revealing that man was the creature offcimumstances. The implicit denial of Free Will appeared in questions on social problems which implied that the remolies for what

The next most frequent subject debated Godown, situated on the Prays TO BE LEC-30DOWN-Spacions Two was that of miracle. The questioners were as unfamiliar with the idea of the higher arder of the supernatural with miracles, in the world without aud in the past, as they were with the iden of free will in the present and the world within. Very few questiona had been addressed to him on worship. These people, for the most part, regarded church-going from the utilitarian standpoint, a thing to do them good--and they did not go. Of the idea of the spiritual mediated through the outward, there was hardly a trace in their questions,
