The situa tion, far from improving, became worse with every month. At length it reached such a pass that in one official report it was considered that in the course of the next winter the majority of the prisoners who had remained in Siberia would pro- bably die, and various estimates placed the "number of these" at between 120,000 and |200,000,"

It was in these circumstances that the Council of the League of Nations, in a Resolution dated April 11th, 1920, entrusted Dr. Nassen with the duty of co-ordinatin DAIRY FARM NEWS. TIENTSIN LINK-A regular serrion la ran from March 13 foremner betwe

all the efforts which had litherto been made

to help prisoners of war and to secure their repatriation. Dr. Nansen, to whose active love of humanity no appeal is ever made in Tain, accepted this heavy responsibility. At that time noy experienced men con- kidored him rash; the work was so immense and the resources almost non-existent. The most optimistic considered that part only of the soldiers could be repatriated and that eran this would take many years and would only be achieved at enormous cont. On July 1st last, Dr. Nansen had completed this repatriation, and the funds placed at his disposal. had not exceed £400,000.

Everything was lacking, but Nansen's fertile genius improved all. There were no ships, and the transport crisis was at its height; Nansen found ships. The mi trust of the Sorist Government had to be sarmounted, and Nansen secured its good. will. The International Committee for Belief Credits could only furnish a limited sum-less than one pound for each life saved, and that only in the form of loans. | Napsen secured so much help, so much good. will, so much_co-operation that meru Isek of money could not stop him..

One month after his appointment as High Commissioner the transport began, On September 15th, 100,000 men had already returned to their native countries. Tu June 1921, this number rose to 350,000, and the work of rescue was three parts accomplished. In March 1922, there remained but a few hundred stragglers, some four thousand, who were often 'diffleält to reach and were not in all cases anxious to return. "On this ocount. the activities of the repatriation organisation were maintained until July 1st. The few hundred men who have not availed theur. selves of this opportunity may now be repatriated through the ordinary channels.

In all, 427,386 persons belonging to 20 different nationalities, have been restored to their homes, thanks to the efforts of the High Commissioner of the League of Nations, assisted by the International Red Cross Committee and the other benevolant organisations to which we have referred.

It is to be hoped that the story of this great enterprise will soon be written. It would contain tales: of hercic » en- deavour worthy of those related in the accounts of the crossing of Greenland and the great Arctic voyage. It would show what human kindness can achieve when it is united with an indomitable will put th
