NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. Mr. T. H. King, Deputy Superintendent of Police, prosecuted a Chinese driver of motor-ear, No. 491, belonging to the Palace Garage, for reckless driving along the Repulse Bay Road.
Mr. King said that on September 29th, at 5 pm, he was proceeding in a car to wards Repulse Bay. At the top of the bill above Deep Water Bay blusting opérations were being carried on, on a site by the side of the road. A small boy armed with a red flag and a drum came out on to the road to give warning that blasting was about to commence. Mr. King's car pulled up and backed a little into the side of the road, The noise was heard of another car coming up the hill very quickly. It was only with difficulty that the small boy jumped out of the way of the approaching car, which pulled up after passing the boy,
The defendant admitted that he was going too fast.
The Magistrate: As this is the first offence against you, I will fine you $5, out you will have to remember that these fines get bigger and bigger if you go on committing this offence.

CLEVER RUSE TO CATCH AN INTIMIDATOR.
TELEPHONE OPERATORS ASSIST IN THE ARREST.
How the telephone materially assisted in the arrest of a youthful Chinese, who was wanted by the Police on a charge of demanding money by mennees, was told at the Blagistracy, yesterday afternoon to Mr. E. W. Hamilton..
The complainant in the case-another youthful" Chinese-employed by the Ah Men and Hing Cheung Tailoring Shop, Queen's Road Central, said be received a letter sometime ago, asking him to "pay the sum of 3200 otherwise he would be ill- treated. After receiving the letter some. one telephoned to the firs and sold the complainant that he must pay the money within three days. The person to whom the money was to be paid would be dis cussed over the telephone on the third day. The manager of the Tailoring Firm inter- viewed Mr. Bennett, the local Manager of the China and Japan Telephone Company. Arrangements were made so that a foki of the Tailoring Firm would wait on the Telephone Company's premises and there receive any messages intended for the com plainant. On the afternoon of that day someone rang up the complainum and it was found that the person at the other end of the lige was speaking from the Stur Ferry Whaffet Kowloon, Detectives "were immediately wat out and the man was arrested in the box at the Star Ferry Whart. The conversation was prolonged in order to enable the detectives to reach the spot.
Mr. Leo Longinsite, for the defendant, pleaded guilty to the charge, and the man was sent to prison for six months with hard labour. A previous conviction for larceny in 10 was proved against the
