TWICE A DAY TAKE

SANATOGEN

(The True Tonic Food)

It will increase your vitality-tone up your nerves and invigorate your whole system. Sanatogen twice a day means a better day's work-means greater energy and staying-power-means that you feel brighter, fresher, and keener all day, in spite of this depressing climate. Try it!.

A famous Professor of Physiology has demonstrated in the Lancet." the increased vitality in the the blood and nervous system-especially in the cells of the brain and spinal cord -after But the feeding with Sanatogen... improvement is not limited to the blood Rad, nerve cells. It affects in a pro- nouseed manner and in a remarkably short time every cell in the body which counts for health purposes,"

Never forget that Sanatogen "is * "secret food, and not a medicine or a remedy." It increases nerve-energy by feeding the nerves not by goading them with drugs or stimulants. Its action is as natural as that of any

ordinary food: it must do good" and " Cannot do harm. That is why doctors give it even to babies. And that is why so many people in the tropics tüke Sanatogen regularly all the year round. -not, as an occasional tonic, but as part of their daily diet

You should do likewise if you want to keep your health and nerve-power at the highest pitch and so avoid the debilitating effects of this climate. Begin at once, and take your Sanstogen systematically a definite amount at fixed hours of the day-for a little Sanatogen often is better than mach Sanatogen seldom.

CHESS-PAST

ST AND PRESENT, SENOE CAPABLANCA'S THEORIES. My first questions to Senor Capablanca writes the special correspondent of the Time were:-What makes a great chess player! How does he remember? Absolutely, or by means of mental pictures of the position of the pieces. The answer was cautious "Some minds work one way, some another. Some rely on sheer memory, some picture the board. But there must be one thing the power to concentrate strongly and completely."

This was really a definition of what- makes for success in general. But there is little or nothing in Senor Capablanca's appearance to suggest an inordinate capacity for concentration. Perhaps a light cor rogation of the brow; and eyeballs that appear to swell he considers a knotty point. Otherwise, he would not awe the most frivalous person.. He looks as young

When he illustrated in theory: of chess by a divergence to lawn tennis, one could fancy him hitting hard on the counte Ho believes in hitting hard whatever the work or game.

Hitting hard is doubtless another part of the secret of general success. Pas there nothing, I inquired, that distinguis sher the chess brain?

of the

game has advanced enormously in the last fifty years. The matches of the past cannot be judged by to-day's standard,. Most of them would fit en comparison. The only player of the past who could stand modern criticism was Morphy, and that is because he followed the same principles as living masters. He relied not so much as his admirers think on the brilliant combinations produced in some of his games, but on his thorough under- standing of the theories on which present players work. Beyond this, personal comparisons between the men of diferent times are impossible."

Then you are quite sure chess has male progress

Formerly chess was played hap-hazard. A few principles governed the best of players. Blany things are now" kadwa "of which the old players were ignorant, es preially in the matter of technique."

Of the younger generation of "masters." Sror Capablanca gave prominence to Reti, Alekaine, and Boğuljaber. He would not compare the chess capacity of the Europeso countries, though he remarked on the skill of the Slay.

"Has the Slar an affinity with chess?

"It is the climate and education. When the Blar is educated he is educated ia directions that make for good chess. Jews play well because for generations they have derated so much of their time to chess.".

BEST AGH FOR CHESS.

"And when does a man play best?"

I should think barches the top of his form around thirty. If he is good enough to be one of the best, he must have shown ability about twenty."

Climate Low does that come in ?" "Hen from cold climates-Englishmen, Germana, Russians, all Northerners-may keep their powers up to fifty or sixty years of age; then from warmer climates, not beyond fifty. A warm climate spe the energy."

Mention of my own mishaps at chess drew from Senor Capablancas wistful smile. I said I supposed he could not understand. He retorted that he could- With a philosophic statement be comforted me; at least, I am Fure he meant 10 comfort, me. This wa the statement:-

"Chess may be learnt--to a certain extent. It is the same, with everything: you can learn to a point, and no further. The rest is what Nature provides you."

It was evidently the moment to discover what he thought of Englishmen as chose players. The better players among Eng lishmen," he observed, would do well in my opinion, to strike out for themselves, and not take it for granted that all the advice given them is necessarily good. They would thereby develop an amount of their orignality that would be to advantage."M

Clearly I was talking with a diplomátist. The fact grew more obriens still wher ha replied to a leading question on the fatore of chess..

"I have been quoted," so the reply ran, "as saying that chess has reached ite limit, I never said anything of the kind. Some- body else made some such remark, and even he was misquoted."
