HANGED BY MIND.

DOCTOR'S ASTONISHING

REVELATION.

An astonishing case of a man who died by auto-suggestion was disclosed recently ata Shoreditch inqueste

Alfred Manning, nged sixty-four; was Found in a kneeling position on the floor at the foot of his bed. His chia rested in a looped handkerchief, the upper part of which had been placed over one of the posta.

Dr. Henry Bird said that there was no appearance of death by strangulation, and there was nothing in the body to urcount for sudden death.” Dr. Bird } added:-

In my opinion the man rested his chin in the handkerchief, and died by auto-suggestion. He thought that he wus being hanged, and died from heart failure.

The doctor asserted that there was not sufficient pressure on the neck' to cause suffocation.

A verdict of Death from heart failure in attempting to commit suicide [by hanging while of unsound mind " was

recorded.

I have spoken to Indians who have told me of men who could stop the beat- ing of their own hearts, and who, if they wanted to die, could die.” said Dr Bernard Hollander, the famous neurofo- gist, to a baily Express representative, Medien history is fall of such cases, for the mind is such a mighty machine that it can conscript to its commands every organ of the body, and completely paralyse all hearings. Its interference with the nervous action of the heart is the actaal enuse of deathy,”

WOMEN'S WORK.

The wisdom of our ancestors has formu. later for us the axiom that d'man's work is tinished at set of sun, but a woman's work is nerer done. This age is continually test- ing old saws by modern instances, and we suppose that the Lady Mayoress of Man- chester, in her statement that "marriage isn't necessarily, a full-time job for a woman," sums up the sad experience of many of her sex, and, for that matter, of many; men as well. What is most adrirable in the Lady Mayoress's for- mula is its studied moderation. There is something about married life which per- sundes most of those who publish their investigations into its phenomena to be absolute and universal. Whatever joys or sorrows their personal adventures have brought them. whatever expedients their private ingenuity in matrimony has devised, inust be for everybody. We appland, there- fore, with hearty fervour the Lady Mayoross's method of admitting somebody else's feceral rale and claiming her own eze plons. All she asks us to gram her, is that for some fraction of her sex, whether to call them happy or unhappy we lick courage to decide, marriage. is not a suffi- ient occupation. They demand, and doubtless in time will secure," that all careers should be open to talent, inale or fale, married or celibate. But it seems Brely that they will remain in the minority. Ituis, after all, not the majority of married women who are in sufficiently opulent cir- cumstances to put upon other shoulders the care of home and children. The great majo rity now, as in the past, would protest, whether with pride or with regret, that mar- riage was to them a full-time job," and something more. One of the commentators on the Lady Mayoress has bidden us observe that the first thing a woman does when she has enough money is to get someone to look after her children." It is, bevertheless, not a universal consequence that the mo ther feels herself alenized by the employ. ment of nurses from motherly care. The full-time job of the poor married woman is largely a matter of domestic service. But it does not follow that a woman who is well off will not find in marriagé enough for her energies and her ambitious. After all, "marriage" is En elastic word. Its meaning is not exhausted by housekeeping and motherhood. The tasks of a Lady Mayoreas, for example, may fairly be counted part of the duties of the marriage. It is not given to every man to be a Lord Mayor, Unt most men have some activities in which their wives can share, some tasks in which their wives can help. Most mothers, if they „choose, can find some occupation in their children's fortunes. We have lately been instructed that the wife who demands_free- dom from her work at home buys that free- dom at toy great u price. It is not necessary to believe that this is a proposition Wai- versal truth. The principles of married conduct, which are valid always, overy. where, and for everybody, are not many. But we suspect the most useful general rula is to assume that marriage is an absorbing and exacting reer. - Daily Telegraph.
