The presence of the members of the League of Nations then in conference in London lent it a special significance, while the exceptionally large number of Indian visitors added colour and picturesqueness in a striking degree. The weather had been a matter of unxiety to many, but happily the vast company were able to assemble fearlessly nuder sunshine that had seasonable radiance..

The Rogal circle was a large one. His Majesty, wearing a grey frockcout and gray tall bat, led the way with the Queen, Her Majesty wore a strikingly beautiful dress of cream face, with long downward insertions, slightly touched with diamante paillettes that eanght every gleam of light, over satin a shade deeper. Simple white dresses were worn by her daughters, Princess Margaret and Princess Theodora, who were most obviously interested in the scene. Everyone, of course, wanted to see the Prince of Wales, who had the brightest of greetings for all he recognised; and present also were the Duke of York, Prince Henry, Viscount Lascelles, the Duke of Connaught, King Manoel and Queen Augusta Victoria, and Lady Zia Wernher.

The scene was a striking one when the King and Queen emerged from the Palace to meet their guests. As their Majesties came into sight at the garden entrance, the bard of the Life Guards, which, like that of the Welsh Guards in anotlier, portion of the grounds, gave a charming selection daring the afternoon, played a verse of the National Anthem, all the men present baring their heads. As the music came to an end the King and Queen moved forwand, closely followed, by other, members of the Royal family, to join the group of distingushed foreign diplomats assembled with the Earl of Balfour for presentation.

The Duchess of Northumberland was dressed in a maure hat with a flat mauve ostrich plume and a mole wrap over a aluminium grey crêpe marocain gown. Laly Mary Combridge's straw hat of a) paler mauve was trimmad with a mauve tulle bow and two harrow silver ribbons encircled the crown. THE JUDGMENT OF SOLOMON.

DIVORCE COURT DECREE.

A novel course was taken by the Chicago Court on July 22nd as a means of ending the domestic trouble between John Haas, a business man, and his wife.

The wonderful gardens of the Palace, of complained of her husband's fondness for Mrs. Haas, who was saing for divorce, which few, save privileged, guests af such functions, have any acquaintance, were seen heard a great deal of conflicting evidence the company of other women. Having in their freshest uspect after the encourag the judge refused to grant a decree, and ing, showers of the past month. The settled the case to the satisfaction of both flowers looked the lovelier for the back-parties by means of two injunctions. The ground of rich green which was to be found first restraina Mr. Heas from visiting, everywhere, and the delightful wooded seeing, talking to or riding with any woman walks at the northern end were greatly except his wife.""" enjoyed, by large numbers of the guests. The fine expanse of lawn facing the terrace was made a natural carpet of luxurious quality for the thousands of promenaders, and such was its yielding though stable texture that little evidence of unusual wear was to be detected at the end of the afternoon. Though the gay liveries

of the King's Watermen. did not, in former daya, direct special attention to the water, the lakes were the 'rendezvous for large numbers during the afternoon; chairs, which were placed quite close to the banks, enabled the guests to enjoy the music given by the Welsh Guards' band from a pavilion close by, in most perfect environment. Altogether the picture of the throng, with its beautifal dresses, moving amidst the verdure, flank- ed on one side by the imposing garden frontage of the Palace, and on others by the rich hangings of numerous temporary pazilions, was singularly inspiring in its frilliance and colouring.

Tea for the Royal party was serged in two tents, before which was the famous Indian shamiaca, with its scarlet canopy and wonderful poles of embossed iver. A great bank of magnificent malmaison. carnations had been arranged beside the Persian carpet spread on the ground. Close beside the Royal tea tents was another, reserved for the Corps Diplomatique, but it was noticed that their Majesties had most of the Ambassadors and Ministers with their wives summoned to engage in a con- versation. The Indian Princes and other notabilities from the Far East also had the privilege of special presentation. Anumber of private friends were brought forward by members of the suite, and amongst these was the veterum General Sir. George Hig ginson, looking wonderfully hale, for all the years that have passed over him sinos. his birth in 1826.

As a concession to Mr. Has plea that be the second injunction to his mother-in-law, was the victim of gossip, the judge directed ordering her to refrain from. "visiting, talking with or in any way interfering with the domestic happiness and connubial felicity of Hans and his wife."

Another circuit of the lawns was then begun, and many enjoyed the recognition of their Majesties and the exchange of a few pleasant words. Very many, too, will feel, a personal sense of gratification that the Queen specially summoned Commis- sioner and Mrs. Booth-Tucker and Colonel and Mrs. Unstone, of the Salvation Army, and expressed the hope that its work was prospering. It was a signficant little 67, QUEEN'S episode, for it was typical of the encour- agement that was extended to workers in) many fields by their inclusion in the gracious! hospitality of the Sovereign.
