THE LONDONER, THE COCKNEY A TRUỀ
COSMOPOLITAN, 17
London is a country in itself, and your trus Londoner a distinct from other in-. habitants of England 'as though he were a Frenchman or a Spaniard. He is a por son of an extreme suavity to the stranger who fears London (writes KT. in the Daily Chronicle.) He delights in giring you information or reassuring you against the terrors of the street. He is cosmo- politan and amazingly a man of the world.
There is nothing more surprising about him than this tolerance. He simply could not get heated about anything, and he is interested in and respectful to other people's point of view. That is the true Londoner.
The Londoner does just what pleases him. If there is a public opinion beis not aware of it. He would carry a cabbage Joven Piccadilly if it suited him, and the other Londoners would not stare: only the non-Londoners. He is a very agreeable traveller, an urbane person in public con vepunces, and theatre queues. There may be there certainly was-a lack of urbanity in the tubes and trains at the crowdel hours, but then here.was a great ass of people whose tempers and nerves were Hustored by the war and its concomitents. For a time the true Tomiloter was auh- mergel.
||
He is a calm person. Perhaps, indeed, he is a surrival of the fittest, for London has passed through nervenucking ex periences. If he were not so urbane, if his nerves were en edge, London would be more intolerable to the newcomer than it ; bis calm and urbanity make even the sermuming naises of the streets possible.
He is never so much of a superman-as when be plunges through the truthe aml leaves you shud lering on the rink. You may shudder on the brink as long as you like, and the Londoner will not And you ridiculous: he finds nothing ridiculous or surprising, Unfortunately, sometimes his greatness does ant save him. The blind Moloch of the traffic is proof against suliniration and compunction, and it is the true Londoner who gets killed in the traffic from time to time, while the shiverer on the brink goes home unaathed 2.
People have grumbled against the Ecg- lish that they meddle with other people's souls, and are concerned with her people's houses. Not the Londoner. He does not care a dalh about your soul or about your house. There is Galli in- | difference to the way other men hire, You think of him with Tamb and Jaak Walton, and Dr. Johnson, all true Lon- doners in their different fashions. The thought of him, the memory of him is of something easy and urbane. Prejudices are for the provincial, not for him. But ob, if you want to more him to a splendid muge or a foolish enthusiasm, you are up against something that is like a rock. He is good-naturedly willing to mufick_ou ocessions; but he will never play Don Quixote
The brain, the arbane Londoner, kind- ly to his kin, a lover of children and animals; an excellent fellow in all the relations of life; he will do everything but play the Don, and there are moments when is tolerance and his half-amused sympathy this citizen of a town which is a country and a worll-are the most hopeless qualities in the world to be up
against.

DRESSES OF THE BRIDE AND

The dress which the bride won "was made of a specially woven frosted bright silver, the effect being brilliant and and supple It was a simple gown. rather mediaval Venetian in character. At either side were arranged two long lands, which fell lose from the waist to below the hem of the skirt. These were untifully em- broidered in dismanté and crystal. The sleeves, of linse, were hang to the wrists and finished with emboidery to corres poul with that on the long ends and on the bodice. The
train was cleverly pleated into a collar, from shoulder to shoulds, and was of
sever, like, the
dress. Over this, and covering it save for a long narrow streak of the silver up the centrs was some of the finest possible examples of old Point, de Venise lice, re markable also for the fact of its perfect preservation and for its four yards of length and yard and a half breath. This lace was burderes all round, silver, like the train. There was a dep with plain ilar and browl elging to below the waist of antique Spanish point lace of the same beautiful parchment tint s the Point de Venise. Both were from a truly remarkably collection of luce, and were the gift of Mrs. Cassel.
