OUR BRITISH STOICS. THE BRITISHER OUT OF WORK, THE ADMIRATION OF THE WORLD.

The Britisher out of work is the admira-" tion of the world. Talking to a French lady the other lay, I happened to mention that we had more than two million of them, writes Mr. W. Keith in the Daily News.

But they are so quiet," she said. Have they no revolvera?"

Her idea of the action appropriate to such a condition was clearly something with revolution in it. She was absolutely astoundel at the demeanour of this vast army of workless, hopeless men, quietly waiting for something to turn-up

The usual phlegm of the unemployed has deserted them at Portsmouth. Dog shows are pleasant, if noisy,, occasions, but the contrast between pampered Pomeranians and babies for whom milk is too dear, has often been drawn by popular writers, and

EDINBUROH, Jupe Pist While all the world knows that Scot men have little to learn in the theory, and practice of the game of golf, it is a me- ancholy fact that their prowess on the cricket field can only be lightly appraised, particularly by our friends across the Banler. A visit of a Scottish Bugby fifteen; also, draws tons of thousands to Twickenham, but the appearance of u Northern eleven at Lords or the Oval leaves the Londoners cold. It must be admitted that Scotsmen do not always take their cricket seriously, and that the climatic con- ditions experienced, even in the height of summer, are sometimes depressing. During the past fortnight an eleven of Scottish amateurs have boldly challenged English Yet if the English working man were irst-class teams in the Metropolis, osten- easily inflamed, there have been more vibly for their education in the art of wielding the willow: At Lord's, where the M.0.0 were blessed with a full share of good fortune, the Scots were rather badly beaten But their performance later on against Surrey was quite good, especially in the departments of bowling and fielding; the batting, however, in which, we thought the side particularly strong, was particularly disappointing.

Aberdeen have gained their first win in the Scottish Counties Champion- ship, and at the expense of Stirling County. Captain G. W. A. Alexander and R. G. M'Kerrow were the principal scorers, and J. Berry bowled remarkably well. The match between Perthshire and Clackmannanshire ended in a draw-there have been far too many draws in this com- petition-Tom A. Bowie putting up 105 for the "Wee. By go ing dows at Shawholm, Poloc lose their position at the top of the table, and Greenock are now leaders. In club engage ments, the F.F.'s of Royal High School are atill in a bad way, and went down Leavily before Carlton. BORNEO

Portsmouth The Derby was a roaring HAIPHONG success. Ascot would have been a phen- omenally brilliant affair, but for the weather, and yet the unemployed, even those who ventura to such places to make what they can, hardly obtrude themselves on the pleasure-seekers' sight.

LI

A prominent lady from a northern city TIENTSIN which is usually almost too noisy and busy for babitation told me this week that it BANGKOT was like a city of the dead. I do not waste sympathy on Labour men," she said, "and yet I think it is miraculous the calm with which, hundreds of men pace the streets without a word of an act of protest agaiost their lot."

A foreigner looking at the photograph in the Daily News this week of a police inspector being" mobbed" an announcing to unemployed men that they could have the crumbs from the maguntes luncheon table said: "Quite right too. Why should be insult them in that way?" When she read how cheerfully the men had fallen into line and taken whatever was given them with a smile and a jest she put the puper down. We talk of an Englishman's pride," she said, "but his patience is more won- derful still."

Doles do not account for it all." There is something in the British character which stands the country in good stead in times like these. Our stoicism, our calm demeanour, our loyal team work were lauded during the war. But the British unemployed are making a demonstration of the stability and worth of the British character which has seldom been surpassed,

the third year in succession, a remarkable Fri performance. Perhaps she is no better ster 120 than two or three of the other Indy golfers, but in the ability to pull off 8m. matches she has no rival. A curious mix. ture of hurry and deliberation, she is quick. and business-like in her movements on BOARD OF the green. In addressing the ball ahe makes a complete circle before bringing back her club, and she has a steady ing pause at the top of the wing. Miss Audrey Kyle, the runner-up, great- ly distinguished herself, Ehe must have been about the youngest player on the field. Yet she is surely the most deliberate player for her years in the whole realm of golf. She plays every stroke as if the fate of empires depended upon it. No other player looked balf so stern, she was all method and concentration. Of the other players, Miss Jean M'Culloch might win any year; she is a clean, crisp hitter, and putis exceedingly well Misa Scraggie is probably the best golfer of them all, but there is something lacking in her match play equipment. Whether it is nerve or temperament or what one does not know certainly she has the golf if she could bring it out, when most wanted. Mrs.Bamber made an interesting -ap- pearance in the event. She is a better. golfer than when, as Miss Freda Macan- drew she used to play before the war. She was easily the coolest and most composed golfer of all, and played with a grace and style surpassed by none.
