PARIS FASHION - NOTES.
(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, IRABEL RAMSAY.]
Patus, June 19th. The two big race meetings at Chantilly- the Prix de Diane and the Prix du Jockey Club-have come and gone, bringing with them their lesson on clothes to be "worA during the coming Summer months. These two days are the beginning of a feverish perio, which lasts till the Grand Prix comea and puts a stop to the "reckless rioting of the previous four weeks, While this period lasts, smart Parisians and the thousands of visitors who flock to the" French capital at this time of the year, spend most of the twenty-four hours of the day flitting from one mound of social gaieties to another, and the Bois, the Champs Elysees: and the cant districts surrounding these two centres are emowded at all hour with smart motor-cars and carriages, and the fashionable theatres, hotels and restau rants are filled with a brillant throng whose one object in life, apparently, is to put into practice the philosophy of Omar Khyaam. Chantilly begins this hectic period; the Grande Semaine with the Grand Prix as a climax, ends it. After this, Paris empties itself of every member of its community which goes to ruke up its Smart Set, and it is even 'bansidered so out, of keeping with the rules of tradition to be in Paris after the Grand Prix, that atray members of! this set who, for some reason or other,. fremain on for a week or so, draw the blinds of their homes, have their departure an- nounced in the Society papers and pretoud, Er all practical purposes, to be well and truly absent from the capital.
Fashions at Chantilly, therefore, and those to displayed at the Drags Day at Autoil and the Grand Prix at Longchamp the following Sunday, have a very special significance, because the designers who Lanched them had in 'view the trulition which will compel every member of their fair clientele to hurry off to mountain and sea-side at the end of the month. With this knowledge in view, therefore, fashions worn at these three big race meetings are fashions which have been designed more expeically for wear in the all chateaux of France or on the miniature race-courses or in: the spick-and-span streets of fashionable ther mal or sea-side resorts, rather than for the dusty streets of Paris. »
The most noticeable feature abort the display at Chantilly was the return to bright colours. The mge for black bas, apparently, died cut and a reaction has ret in for the brightest and most varied of colours. There is still the tendency to mix colours which I noticed at the first Spring meeting of the seaspa at Longchamp & few weaks back. This is even developed in a host of ways, so that the dress, hat, parasol and bag or other necessory all form so many differyat notes In one composition of colours. Asimplor idea is to have the dress in a neutral shade and the hat in a bright shade of flaming red, vivid fellow or orange. Al though almost all coloursary being worn. there is a marked preference for yellow in all ita, moods. Orange, Burnt orange, cod de roche and other kindred shades follow next, whilst the fashion for red of last season has not yet died out sufficiently to exclude this colour from fashionable gatherings. Maure in a shade the French call "glycine" (wysteria) is tremendously popular, especially for hats; but blue and green are only to be seen at infrequent intervals. There was a time when, on account of a quality attributed to it, yellow was an absolute drug in the market, but common- sense has evidently triumphed over pure nonsense, for now yellow is to be seen on every band und women of all classes, wear it as heedlessly as formerly they wore any other shade.
Lace is the material which predominates above all othere. Every second dress was in Ice yesterday. Every type and every shads that man has yet created were to be aeen fitting about in the forest glade of old Chantilly Ivory silk lace mounted over crepe Georgette or satin went to make up the more handsome drones, but the must delightful models' in delicate amber," glycine burnt orange and pink helped to give this picturesque course the appearance of a Sussex garden in summer. Not only is silk lace fashionable, but cot- ton, wool, string, tape, anything whatever that has been turned and twisted into the semblance of lace is worn. Heavy Venetian lace is worn-in conjunction with light fabrics such as crepe Georgette; flet sad wile mesh lace are worn with crepe de Chise and satin, and handsome blonde laces are worn over or with practically every Summer material known to the manu- facturer."
