COLLAPSE OF THE MARK.

ANXIETY IN GERMANY,

LONDON, July 7th.

The collapse of the mark is causing: anxiety in financial and other circles in Germany, where it is attributed to low of confidence in the stability of the State following the murder of Dr. Rathenau.

Manufacturers are buying foreign cur runcy in order to purchase raw materials, and the pubic is likewise realising marks.. These facts are borris out by Ruuter's correspondent at 'Vicuna, where the pound. sterling closed at 108,000 crowns, chiefly duo to Berlin buying of Western moueys there. The facts are further confirmed by the famous financial journal the Frankfurter Zeitung, which describes the aforementioned action as due to the Germans' will pes- simism rather than to foreign speculation, and considers that the great danger is the manner in which prices have risen pro portionately to the downward value of the mark, thereby resulting in the banks being overwhelmed with demands for loans. The paper advises energetic hand- ling of the situation to save political disaster, and demands legislation against" boarding foreign currency.

GRIEVANCES OF BRITISH SAILORS AND FIREMEN, "INHUMAN" LIVING CONDITIONS.

Losnos, July 7th.

A deputation representing the Trade Union Congress, the Sailors' and Firemen's Union and the Amalgamated Marine Workers' Union bare complained to Mr. Baldwin that firemen on British ships work- ed 56 hours a week and stewards from 50 to 96 hours. They alleged that the living conditions of seamen on many well-known modern liners were "abnman." "Mr. Baldwin made a sympathetic reply and promised to visit vessels to see conditions.

THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT. THE ATTEMPT TO FORM A COALITION.

BERLIN, July 7th. The action of the middle-class Centro und the Democratic parties in approaching the monarchical People's Party does not facilitate the attempt to foria a coalition Government in defence of the Republic by the incorporation of te Independent Socialists. The action of the middlecles party is due to a fear that excessive radicalisation of the Government is likely to result if the Government is unchanged.

SOVIET PERSECUTION OF THE CHURCH. SEVERAL DEATH SENTENCES.

JosDON, July 7th. A message from Moscow sary the trial at Petrograd of priests and others for opposing the requisitioning of Church property resulted in eleven being sentenced to death, including the Metropolitan, Benjamin, a Bishop and several priests aad professors. Fifty-three were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. The Court decided to criminally prosecute the Patriarch Tikhon.

LONDON, July 7th. The Continent is at present faced with a very grave health problem-namely, the movement of disease-carrying refuges from Russia. Cholera is prevalent in the Ukraine, where there are two thousand cases daily in Odessa alone, and the discass ia sporadic along the Volga valley.

The American Relief Administration is shipping five large disinfection plants to Moscow for use at refugee concentration centres, aud is vaccinating all recipients of American food.

LONDON, July 7th The House of Commone unanimously passed the second reading of the Washing toa Treaties Bill, which had already passed the House of Lorde. Mr. Asquith "arged similar agreements as regard armies, and other speakers urged the limitation of aerial

armaments.

Colonel Amery, replying, said the Govern ment wished to secure the complete aboli tion of the submarine and effective limita tion of land and air armaments by negotiation and conference is soon, as other Powers were ready to confer.
