(Cheers,) Or Horrocks it is said that by the aid of the rulest machinery, he calculated for the first time the transit of Venus across the Sun. He was a clergyman; the transit of Venus took place on a Sunday. He could only find time to see whether his calculations were correct if it should so happen that the transit occurred in a clear sky between the religious services, which he was bound to conduct. Heaven was kind to him; the sky was clear, the transit took place as he had foreseen, and he had the happiness of look.. ing at it through a telescope which cost him, if I remember right, half a drown. How happy are my friends from America! Hor rocks was born just about the time that the Mayflower started upon its gerat historic. voyage, and in the Continent which the! Maystorer Troughs within the orbit of vivilis- ation the successors of Horrocks have spent more than half a crown upon those magni- ficent institutions which they so admirably control. (Cheers.) They do not love science better that we do, but they live in a hap pier climate, and it has fallen to their lot to observe what we in this cloudy climate cannot observe, and they have had the yet greater fortune, of being able to turn these observatories to account, and to put them. selves in the very forefront of astronomical discovery." I am not going to discuss the progress of astronomy, and I must refrain from further historical reflection. Let me con- elude by saying that as we are here to celebrate the first 100 years of existence of this society, so it is our right and our privilege to look forward, to the best of our abilities, to the next 100 years-as why should we not ?-and advances in know- ledge proportionate to those which have marked the hundred years which have just come to an end. This society, when it meets again in three generations, will be able to look triumphantly back upon a great and glorious past. (Loud cheers.)

The Chairman, replying, said that they believed with the utmost confidence that the wishes expressed by the Earl of Balfour would be fulfilled. Whatever had been the progress of the last hundred years, they realised that still they were only at the beginning. They had climbed the foothills
