PARIS FASHION NOTES.

PARIS, May 22nd..

The sun has been so lazy this year and so very sparing of his beams that yesterday was the first day on which race-goers at Longchamp could don their Spring garb; and even then there was a sharp little wind blowing which compelled some women to wrap up in fur coats and others to keep to their Winter tailor-mades, so that the slow- ing, after all, was not as complete and dis tinctive as it would otherwise have been. Still, it was interesting, if only as an in- dication of the way the fashion wint is going to blow for the next few months. "

The line still remains as straight and simple as ever it has bein, and all, ap. parently, that designers have been able to do has been to rely for originality and effect on slours and trimmings Some of them give one the impression of having. run amok in sheer desperation, and launch ed toilettes that are so bizarre in colour and line and such an incongruus misture of materials and trimmings that they are ladicrous, when not actually painful, to behold. The saving grace, however, about such apparitions is that Parisiennes are far too well-balanevi in fashion matters and far too eager to express-aut deform,-~ their individuality by means their clothes, to accept such examples with any degree of seriousness. Mannequips will parade them at the big race meet- ings for the next couple of months, and then they will drop, like freaks of the past. into complete oblivion..

One very distinct feature about the new fashions seen resterday was that of the mixture of colours. Instead of on: definite colour or colour scheme, there was a whole. ale preference for a blending of several colours, Hate, instead of being trimmed with a ribbon of one colour, were mass of "different-coloured ribbons; dresses, in- stead of being trimmed with one single note of colour, were also finished with ribbons, panels, lace or stripes in a con- fusion of more or less bright shades. An excellent example of this latest whim was to be seen in a beautiful „Premet creation worn by a tall, dark beauty whom crowds followed from one cal of the reserve to the other. This was in ivory rokilda cloth, inade perfectly plain except for a line slight ly blousing over st. the waist and long bell-shaped sleeves; these and the deep tarned-bak cellars were finished with i band of stripes in different shades of purple, mauve, black, and old gold, and suggested the Roman silk colourings which were so. popular a year or two ago. The hat with this dress was a wide-brimmed, drooping shape in black pedal straw, trimmed with a dozen or so wide bands or velvet in shades to match the stripes on the dress, these being drawn serous and completely. covering the crown" and jätting out the right side in a group of ends.
