RITUAL, OF THE CENTURIES
STILL IN VOGUE.
The lights in the Temple blink and gloara through the evening mist of the riverside, and homing crowds, beelless of the romance and history of the place, hurry through the dim ell courts on their way to the Underground froin Fleet-street und the Strand. Suddenly a dull insistent booming reverberates through the glooms: a hoarse lowing sougl like à distant siren. wailing in a North Sea fog, or a bull- moose's cull; jet lesa mechanical · ural more suggestive of human agency, with something of the almost sinister note of conches blown from stockaded villages in the steamy darkness of a West African night.
It is the "Flyer sounding bie oxhorn to warn the Benchers and members of the Milk Temple that dinner-time approaches.
His title. writes a legal correspondent to The Tinies, is derived from the functions of his palacessors in bygone times. Every evening they brought the road for the Temple by boat from the hakeries “neat Charing village, in time for dinner in Hali and for distribution to the unsters and apprentices of the law who lived within the precincts. Now the title is officially applied to all the butlers and servers in the hälls of the laner and, Middle Temples.
DINNER IN HALL,
Every evening, during term time, the Masters of the Bench and utter lartis- ten" of the Tons sit down to dinner in hall, and are served with a dignified ritual which has remained-unaltered for three centuries. Students, too, are bousi to mark their keeping of terms by attend. ance at dinger in ball on a prescribed number of nights.

The Benchers sit in state at the high- table, presided over by the treasurer wr senior Duster, anl seated according to the dates of their election. After h çeremonious welcome to the Bench by the senior barristers the head "Panger" hangs loudly upon his book, and "two words of iL Latin grace precede the service of the meal, no. longer purveyed by a gentil munciple," as in Chander's Ling but prepared in the vast kitchens of the Inn below.

The Barristers (ranged in strict order | of seniority of call) and students, duly clad iz gowns, line in the body of the hall in "mosses" of four: each mess being served separately and alloited its quantun" of cliret, and of port, and fright ahe "at discretion. From the senior Bar mess are summoned new Benchers on the night of their election, the "panyer "conveying to them with stately slemnity the compli ments of the Treasurer and Beach with an invitation to take their seats at the high table; whither lends them and applusse from all the company. On such occasions, the loving-cup asses round, and the toast of the new Beuchers is accliuresi.
THE NEW PORTIAN.
Charles Lamb's "Obl. Denchers" would view with aunzement the messes of romtely wonen students, wearing their gowns with a feminine gracy that invests with an almost coquettish charm those sombre and somewhat fusty garments. Nor would their astonishment decrease at the sight of students from the Indies, East und` West, and from Africa; whose counten ances, of every shade of complexion—from the pale olive of Central India to the ebon of Nigeria-throw into vivid relief the occasional "bright colour of a turban orja
pagri."
In the buzz of conversation" one 01- pects to hear" grave comment on the Sale of Goods Act, or, the "Bale in Shelley's case;" ́but more often one catches lighter phrases. such as "two up at the turn," or "two steps, to the side-almost like a foxstrut"!
The setting of the old hall, its panelling blazoned with the amos of former Trea surers and Readers, carries the imagination back through history to other scenes of dignified and courtly revel; when “the grare Lord Keeper led the briwis," and "a Virgin Queen drank ale at the high table or joined the Bepchers in a “Galliðard.” The final grace sail, the Bench ratizes to sip its port in the Parliament chambers, and groups of barristers and students make their way out under the crescent, moon through the dark, deserted courty, and so- Like the immortal diarist who has left record of his own enjoyment of such Temple din- Ders 200 years ago—" betimes to bed, to sleep well all the night."
LIGHTNING HITS PLANE,

experience, unique in the unnals of aeroplane Bying, has just befallen Captain. E. D. C. Herne, whose double return trip between London and Paris, accomplished in a single flying day, was, recorded - cently. While passing along the airway for Paris, Captain Herne saw beary thunderclouds over the Channel. Skirt ing round these, be observed two or three vivid flashes of lightning close to his machine. His cruft seemed to shudder and besitate in ita 100-miles-an-hour flight, and was momentarily in the centre of ass of light. Recovering itself rapidly the seroplane continued smoothly in flight, neither Captain Heros nor his assistant suffering in any way from their weird experience. A moment tater Captain Herne rang up the nearest land station on his wireless telephone, and neked them whether they thought the trailing wire of his receiving and transmitting apparatus might be connected with this strange phenomenon. They replied advising him to wind it in temporarily, which he did. Experts believe Captain Herne's aeroplane tappened, at the moment the shock was experienced, to be in the path of lightning which was rushing earthward; but the machine having no direct correction with the earth and the trailing wire acting na a sort of conductor, the lightning: simply passed on its way.
