PSYCHOLOGY OF PARENT- HOOD.

AUTHORITY AND PATRONAGE.

The National Birthrafe Commission met at, the Commission Room, Rhondda House, on April 28th, under the presidency of Principal A. E. Garris, when Dr. Crichton Miller gare evidence on the care of adoles- cence. In the course of his evidence,he mid parenthood that was worthy of the Damo was a matter of idoalism. The failure of the parent who had high ideals and good intentions to inspire his children with idealism was a suficiently pressing problem. There were certain resurrent types of parental failure along these liner:

(a) The over-solicitous parent sought to smooth away all difficulties from the child's path, and to protect hig? from conflict of Any kind. The result was that the pri vileges of childhood became too precious to be abandoned; the ideal of growth and maturity had no chance to attract, and the boy or girl refused to grow up. This Puter Pan motif was common in so-called upper society.

b) The eclipsing parent was so perfectly capable and efficient that the child des veloped a permanent sense of inferiority which stood in the way of his self-

realisation.

(c) The over-attentive parent made the child aware of being a constant centre of interest. Everything that it sail or lid produced some noticeable reaction of praise," blame, anxiety, or amusement. The result was that the child learnt to measure the effect of his actious in terms of the sens. tien that they created rather than in terms of achievement-the normal way of growth. Sensation and achievement were alter natives, and the choice between them was of the most far-reaching importance.

At the centre of the question of develop- meat lay authority; the adult side of the factor of anggestibility in the child. Authority might be used, to obtain in- mediate results in good behaviour, but there were parents who were so well satisfied with basing well-behaved children that they never went on to inquire whether there was any living aspiration or ideal be- hind the child's conduet nor, whether obedience had been purchased at too high a price. The misuse of authority, was res ponsible for producing two common social types, either of which was able to react quite normally to life. These were the rebel who defied public opinion und must always bus a heretic at all cists, and the ultra suggestible who was able to resist the influence of the majority and found safety only in orthodoxy. Finally, the misuse of authority was seen in ligious training, which often defeated its own end by presenting the ideal to the child or the adolescent as inseparable from some form which he could but reject. In analysing the breakdowns, of after life it was found again and gain that the question of authority was of can- tral importance in the history of the individual's development and in his present problem.. Mary parents were ready to Velegate their responsibilities to teachers DAIRY

and others. While this might be fortunate in certain cases, it was wrong in principle, and indicated the low value that was set on

| the uppertunities of parentage,

Finally, an immensely important factor in the whole psychology of parent- hood, there was the spirit of patronage. It was deeply rooted in the biological tendency of the adult to fear the laseren- dence of the young and their rivalry in the fell of life It was often the uncon- scious motive underlying treatment that bore all the marks of solicitude and devotion. It was one of the causes of our reluctance to give our children any form of sex instrnetion: we would prefer' that they shed remain immature, un- kuuwing, and that we should still bo able to feel that there was a golf of know- ledge and experience fixed between us and them. Thus we tried to pass on to them ethical Meals or a system of religion which hala water-tight boltbead between it and the biggest biological force of life-sex.

There are two ways in particular which adult patronage was apt to binder develop- mens in the case of the girl One was the part of the mother who represented to her daughter the painful and self-sacrificing sil of the role of motherhood in order | to impress her with all that bad 'been done for Ep. The girl carried this fear away aud night never overcome it. The other wus the part of the father who was ready to make everything easy for his daughter's marriage, but had himself shown her such an example of the domnestic hally that the girl bad devided that marriage was not good enough. The same spirit of patronage was often seen in the pressure that was brought to bear on lays to adopt the family profession. And patronage extended ular

NEW SEASON'S FASHIONS.
