- ROYAL WOOING. HOW LORD LASCELLES PROPOSED TO PRINCESS MARY,

The war killed a curtain amount of "Miquette and ceremony at the British Court. In the matter of the love asira of ladies of the English reigning house, much cremory has still to be observed, says a home papez.

any

Briefy here is how the courtship of the Princess Mary by Lord Lascelles was con- ducted: They never met plane. It is 000 of the rigid rules of Court etiquette that the daughter of the sovereign must never be alone in this presence of man with the exception of immediate male relations. Always when the Princes mai Lord Lasoulles she was attended either by her Lady-in-Waiting, Lady Joan Mul- halland, or one members or a member of her own family or by a Lady of Queen Mary's household.

Of cours before the courtship began at all Lord Laserlies had to obtain the consent of the King and Queen to win the hand and heart of their only daughter. When their Majesties consented to Lord Lasonites doing so it did not necessarily mean that Princess Mary would agroo to marry the Viscount; up to that time her Royal Highness had met him about half a dozen times and bad only the most dutant acquaintance with him. She had Dever spoken to him for more than live minutes at their meetings in the hunting field and all-room. She had never dupond with him. But Lord Lascelles could not propose to the Princess until it had been conveyed to him by a mem ber of the Princes family that if he did propose the Princess would be likely to regard bis proposal favourably.

INVITE TO SANDRINGHAM.

The information was conveyed to Lord Lascelles by the Duke of York at a din- ner at the Marlborough Club. The next day, Lord Lascelles wrat to Sandringham

64, PEKING Poal.

When be did so walking behind her Royal AGENTS for Hongkong Highness were two ladies of Queen Mary's Court, The four then returned to Sandringham House for afternoon tea. There were present the King and Queen, who received from, the Princess the in- Formation that she had promised to marry the man standing beside her. It was then that Lord Lascelles gave the Princess his first embrac, kissing her on both chunks, The next day the whole party at Sandringham returned to Buck ingham Palace, and the announcement of the betrothal was rent out to the press that night;

and South China, DODWELL & CO. LTD. TELEPR. 1030 2. QUEEN'S BLDG.

During the engagement of the Princess, etiquette forbade her to be alode for a moment with Lord Laserlles, though she saw him practically every day. When Lord Lascelles called at the Palace he was shown into the Queen's boudoir, where he was received by the King and Queen or some members of the Royal family and members of the household. Prine Mary would enter shortly after his arrival anu be would greet her by fret taking her hand in his hand, kissing Jat, then kissing her on both checks.

WEDDING ARKANGEMENTS,"

Had Princess Mary married into a reigning Europas family, the wedding would have had to be arranged in accord. anoe with the wedding ceremony

ing at the Court of the future husband. 1 Hut as things were the King had entire contro; of all the wedding arrangements. In normal times a week after the an nouncement of a royal betrothal the wed. ding presenta began to arrive in large numbers for the Bride and bridegroom."

A leading jeweller and goldsmith re ceived orders for gifts for the PrinceSA. to the value of £3,000, including orders from, three of the richest men in Eng! land-Sir Phillip Sassoon,Lord Roths child, and Lord Ireagh, all intimate friends of the Rush Family. The jewel-

articipated that the orders for wed ding gifte from then three individuals alone would amount to at least 25,000, and that by this time he would have received orders for wedding gifts for the Princess and Lord Lascelles amounting to £20,000.

Men who in prewar days would have thought nothing of speading £2,000 on a wedding gift for the only daughter of the reigning house now think twice be fore they will spend £200 on one..

MARRIAGE METTLEMENT.

The details of the marriage, settlement by Lord Lascelles, approved by the King. is one of the most voluminous deda of its kind on record. and rovers 70 folios of quarto parchment. It took six weeks to engross

The main financial clause in it is to provide for a settlement by Lord Laser- TE £250.000 on the Princes. Thn money will be held in trust by throw trustees, of whom the Prince of Wales is oo. The interrast on the money became payable to the Princria personally from the date of the marriage, and in the event of Lord Lascelles dying before the Prin- cess the sum of £220,000 pages, lo her and the trust comes to an end.

In the event of the Princess por-de- dossing her future husband and if there are no children of the marriage, the £250,000 would go back to the Lawtelles family; Lord Lazelles' father, the Earl of Harewood, under the deed of settle ment, has undertaken to create-a charge on Hia property of £25,000 for each child of the marriage born before his death.

After his death the obligation to create these charges on the property for the bepest of the children of the marriage devolves on Lord Lascelles."

Forty pages of the settlement deed deal with the eventuality of Lord Lascalles dying before his father.
