This is all right for the woman Fwhose dress allowance obliges her to make.. last year's dress look as much like this year's brand new one as possible, but for the designer such a state of affairs must surely be enough to cause all the members of this calling in the Gar Capital to commit suicide through sheer desperation. The worst offender of all, of course, is the "chemise" frock.
Countless attempts hare bean made to dislodge this particular type of frock from its niche of popularity but all have failed, for the reason, no doubt, that there has never been a style so easy to wear and so becoming since the days when Grecian women went bout the world robed in all the simplicity und grace of straight, clinging garments. These have fallen to the lot of the modern woman, and she is very naturally serting what degree of emancipation has been accorded her of late by refusing to give them' up. Last year, designers, in a desperate effort to break this "chemies" frock strike, brought in the many-gored tailored coat. Parisiennes played with this for a season and laughed as they weat about the world looking like so many human hour-glasses. Designers must have smiled, too, until the day when their fair clients suddenly turned upon them and demanded straight lines once again. Designers replied with the Russian costume, and for many months after that Parisiennes. went about bultobed up the left side, in coûts and jackets and jumpers as severe in cut as any uniform worn by the terest-looking Cossack Gnard. Tiring of this, they made still further demands, and were rewarded with the loose, jamper seat that is as nearly like a sack tied in the middle as the heart of the capricions Parisienne could wish for.
