FALKENHAYN'S DEATH.

THE VERDUN FAILURE.

General Erich von Falkenhayn, whose death was announced last month, was born on September 11th, 1861, and began his military career in the Cadet Corps, out of which he passed in 1880 as a lieutenant in the Oldenburg Regiment No. 91. After Jussing through the. Kriegsakademie, he was attached to the Great General Staff, and in 1893 he was appointed to a staff captainty.

In 1897 von Falkenhayn was sent ont ne u military instuctor to China, and on his turn two years hter he rejoinal the Prussid Army with the rank of pujor, attached to the Geheral Stad and was almost at once dispatched on u six months mission to the Government of Kiaochow. - He, took paæt, on the stuff sf Count Waldersor, in the Chinese campaign, and after the conclusion of pave the remainel behind with the troops of • cupation. Returning again to Germany Falkenhayn held varioud important posts in Metz, Magdeburg, and elsewhere before, in July, 1913, he was appointed Prussian Minister of War and simultaneously was promoted to be lieutenant general, thereby jumping over the heads of about 70 sénior

officers.

He had only held this office for a year when the war broke out, and the resignation of Count vou. Moltke after the first battle of the Marne led to the appointment of Fal- kenhayn in his place

Falkenhayn did the best that was in him with the great disadvantage of being, com- pelled to hold defensively the long, Western front from Switzerland. to the Falkenhayn was a convinced “westgruer," ind it was he who worked out the plans of the attempted break through to Calais upon which the ex-Kaiser laid so much street, and which led to the well-known results at Dixmude and Ypres and on the Yser."

·

In 1915 Fulkenhayn conducted most comprehensive campaigus against Serbia and Russia, but he always held that there was Ba question of winning the war on the East. ern front, ad it was this view that led to bis long (and ultimately fatal) series of disputes with Hindenburg and Ludendorff. Hinden- burg held strongly that there was a cliance of crushing Russia, and be disagreed pro- foundly, with Falkenbayn's Eastern strategy. It was, nevertheless, Falkenhayn's scherne in support of the Austrain army which gave Mackensen his great victory at Gorlice, in Galicia, whereas Hindenburg had urged a great turning movement on the extreme northern lank on the Niemen front.

These domestic quarrels Becaine further accentuated when it was decided to make the great attack upon Verdon under the ex- Crown Prince, and many of Hindenburg's divisions were drawn westwards to make a certainty of success. They never returned, thanks to the genius of the French Com- maid and the immortal bravery of the French Armies, and this terrilly Costly failure was paid for in the customary way. Falkenhayn was relieved of his post (August, 1916) and gave way to that com- bination of Hindenburg and Ludendorf which lasted down to the end of the war.

In relieving" von Falkenbayn of bis duties as Chief of the General Staff the ̈er-') Kaiser Ind indicated that he would shortly be employed in another capacity. This opportunity was afforded by the entry of Rumania into the war. The scheine of the operations was exceedingly simple, and well illustrated the Prussian method of achieving success on a wide front by the use of only ú small body of first-class troops to break the Hongkong, 22nd May, 1922." way for the others. In 13 days the unduly scattered Rumanian armies were driven out of Hungary by a numerically inferior op ponent, and they were gradually 11311- couvred into such position that Falkenhayn and Muckensen were able in unite their armies before Bukarest and then drive their enemies eastward.
