bad the opportunity of meeting so many TINTAIN of you gentlemen who are fighting in the van to able to have this permanent [ penury (Chrers.) The vitality of our con stitution depens upam commerce, and the pulse of our well-being upon the volume of our trade. To re-establish and to main- tain that vital flow, I feel that it is essen tial to have peace both at home aulabroad.. This is either the time nor the place to discuss the latter, but the preservation of pence it home is surely in our own hands. To my mind unity and necord an only be obtained by spontaneous add helpful desire to understal pe another's difficul ties, and by mutual and combined effort to overcome them as far as we are able.
As you all know, I am no expert'in com merc, and 1 hesitate to express an opinion en the immediate outcome of all our troubles; but with a bation whose people showed such courage, fortitude, and good sinse in the recent terrible war, and whose men, audi women Lave so bravely and

plainingly enlund the even harder trials of peace, I cannot help being an optimist. (Cheers.). One cannut "help feeling that then are hopeful signs of a better dawn, not only in the syroptoms of revising trade, but beter still in the ridences of a better spirit of good will throughout the nations, and the scalization that inutnal antagonism ena disaster, whereas operation mame sticcyst.. (Cheers.) If this spirit be applied to the experience of the present and to the example of the past, I am confident that the united wisdom and ability of all classes' will rescue our trade from its culties; will enable this country to refinn lier proud position in the commerce of the world and will afford evidence that the Brotherhood of Nations to which we belong will always stand as an unequalled example of industrial stability and Imperial goo (Cheers.)
TRADE DISPUTES DANGES.
sense."
Mr. Stanley Baldwin, President of the Bourd of Trade, replying to the toust His Majesty's Ministers," said that he had not believed in a personal devil before the war, but he should now, and be believed he was engaged trying to destroy British in- dustry by causing trade disputes. Whether be slept at Moscow or not he did not know, but whenever there was a flicker of trade there would be a strike or lock-out. It was an elenient of danger in causing industrial struggles that the work of managing and superintending the big organizations, whether of masters or inen, was apt in the case of the masters to fall out of the hands of en who know their jobs, and with the men to fall out of the hands of men who had been working men all their lives and to get into the hands of men who have had more of an academic than an industrial training The obvious result is that, instewl of having the genuine masters and the genuine men fate to face, they had advocates on each side who would rather die than give way.
PUBLIC TASTE IN BOOKS, LORD BURNHAM ON LITERATURE AND JOURNALISM.
At the 20th annual dinner of the London Master Printers' Association on March 20th, Tord Burnham said the most delightful books of the last few years had been bio. graphies. The public taste was evidently moving that way. He was told the best seller of the last year had been Mrs. Asquith's memoirs-that perbapa - showe the standard of publie requirements and perhaps, he might add, of public taste. He had read that in America they were bringing out a new edition of the Bible "headlines aud modern with snappy pictures and they were going to "write up" the dali parts. He was sure the English printers would not be behind in enterprise and artistic achievement. There was no better printing in the world than the est English printing. If it was not true that all good journalism was good literatura he was beginning to think that all good literature was good journalism. There was an increasing demand for the description of current events by men who had won fame AGENTS in other walks of literature..
