· HONGKONG GENERAL CHAM- BER OF COMMERCE.

We have received from the Secretary of the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce a budget of correspondence recently dealt with by the Chamber, from which we quote the following. -THE DEATH OF SIR HENRY

(Enclosure-i

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, THUKSDAY, MAY 11TH, 1922.

Admiralty, S.W. 1.

3rd January, 1099. Si-au commanded by My Lorda Commissioners of the Admiralty to ar quaint you for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies that they have, had under consideration your letter 57500/21 of the 25th November trans; MAY.mitting a copy of a despatch from the Governor of Hongkong relative to the discartinuance of the supply of Admiralty charts for use by the Mercantile, com-

unity

At the end of February a letter of con 4iolaner was forwarded to Lady May, waveying the following resolution passed by the Committee of the Chamber, at a meeting held on February 23rd. ---

That the Hongkong Grieral Chamber of Commercs has received with profound regret the news of the death of Sir Henry May, G.C.M.G., formerly Gayer nor of Hongkong and desires to place on record its appreciation of his valu able services to Hongkong during a long and distinguished career in the

Colony.

DAILY WEATHER MAPS. The following letter was addressed to the Government on this subject:-, *..

Hongkong, 1st March, 199 BR-1 liave the honour to enclose for your information cops of correspondence which has been exchanged between this Chamber and the Director of the Royal Observatory on the questing of the issue of a Daily Weather Binn

The great volume of shipping, trading Ja thego latitudes, where dangerous storms are se prevalent, demands the maximum of minute information procurable, and there is no doubt that a daily meteoro logical survey would be of the utmost practieni value."

My Committee is strongly of opinion that the Community should be supplied with such a service, the expense of pro- viding the equipment and staff for which appears to them small as compared with the benefits to be derived by Mariners.

It is generally recognised that Obsery. valneies 14 be kept up-to-date and enlarged with the growth of shipping interests, and in this connecting Hongkong *Observatory has not adequately met the needs of the Colony, for want of funds. My Committee, therefore, urges that a suflicient supplementary grait of funds should be made to the Obervatory, to" enable it to issue first eles Daily Weather Maps and generally to extend the issue of Weather Guides to Mariners.

It may be noted that, whereas the annual expenditure of the Hongkong Royal Observatory has risen from $23,000 to $34,000 since 1912, expenses in connee tion with the London Meteorological Office have ingreased from $40,000 LO $101,000.
